I am almost certain CDnow had clips before, but they are gone now. Any help anyone? One of the unbreakable rules of the Universe is that any show at the Iron Horse by any of one's favorite artists is not, under any circumstances, to be missed. I don't even remember the opener's name ... Elliott something. His music was just about as memorable. I kind of felt sorry for the guy -- next to Susan, even a not-so-mediocre musician sounds very mediocre. He ended up sitting at the table next to ours for Susan's set, and it was clear he enjoyed it very much, so I do give him points for that. Susan started off with "Time Between Trains" and "Shade of Grey", after which she announced there would be an unscheduled intermission and left the stage. During the real intermission we'd noticed someone stumble coming down the stairs from the loft and then limp over to her seat at one of the front tables -- she must have really hurt herself, because the reason for the interruption in the performance was that an ambulance had been called. Eek. I hope she's okay. After about 15 minutes Susan returned, and the break didn't seem to have affected her at all. If anything, it kicked on the loopy switch -- I haven't laughed that hard at one of her shows in a while. She even did the "Mies van der Rohe" song (to the tune of "Three Blind Mice"), which I had only heard about in these pages. That one just about put me on the floor. "He cantilevered everything to the hilt/So if your house has a dangerous tilt/It's a Frank Lloyd Wright" New songs were in evidence, and they were good. Nothing that hasn't appeared in a recent set list. I think the one that mentions the post-its is an absolute scream. Because of the unscheduled break and the fact that the Iron Horse had a late show (another band), she had to cut the piano portion a bit short, which was a shame because I know how much she loves playing the baby grand at the Iron Horse. It seemed like she was tossing in more flourishes than usual to make up for it. So no "Philanthropy", . Maybe tonight. (Yes, thanks to the post here the other day about the new Circle of Friends venue with a tuned grand piano and the added incentive of the amazing Rachael Davis opening, woj and I are making the trek to Franklin later on this afternoon. Hope to see a bunch of you there.) One other thing I should mention is that the sound was *incredible*. Best I've ever heard Susan sound, and that is saying something. The sound is always good at the Iron Horse, but this was on a different plane. Everything was exactly how it should be -- the guitar had that "oomph" in the low end that gives her that distinctive sound. woj complimented the sound guy afterwards, and really everyone should have signed a big thank-you card for him on the way out. Especially since the last time we saw her, at the Somerville Theater last month the sound was a mess. We ran out right after the show was over, because there was a very cool thing going on a block away at Fire & Water: Dorothy Scott and Sloan Wainwright, with Jane Kelly Williams. Dorothy and Sloan are two of the best and least-known musicians in the area (it's a real crime that they're not playing for hundreds of people every night). And Jane Kelly Williams put out a really nice album in the mid-90's and hadn't been heard from since. She hadn't performed in front of people in years. It was a great doubleheader, and well worth getting home at 2 am. Sadly that is not one of the free NNF tracks offered by Amazon. "Shade of Grey", "Stationary", "All of the Above" are their only offerings. Also, Tim wrote, "I guess I'll have to see if all these neat-o programs on my new PC can make one (mp3) for (my friend). In my experience, most new PCs don't come with anything useful as far as creating mp3s directly from CD. The PC vendors mostly just provide a Windows Media format encoder which is loaded down with cumbersome and useless Digital Rights Management garbage. Do yourself a favor and go to: http://www.cdex.n3.net/ and download the excellent, free, open source program CDEX. It makes mp3 (and Ogg Vorbis) file creation as easy as putting a CD in, allowing it to automatically retrieve artist/album/title information from Internet site 'CDDB', click the "mp3" button, and, a few minutes later it's done! I have used it to encode my entire CD collection (300+ CDs) so I can listen to everything from my computer and from my portable mp3 player. It's great for me because I'm mobility impaired and can't grab a CD off the shelf and stick it in the computer. Finally, I have complete instantaneous access to everything in my collection ;-) ! Incidentally, if you go to the Amazon downloads, don't leave without checking out Laura Cantrell. She's a New York City based countryish singer-songwriter. I saw her open for the most magnificent Elvis Costello a few weeks ago and was very impressed. I should thank most Susan Werner fans would enjoy Laura Cantrell. I can't get a direct link to any of this, but if you go to: http://music.amazon.com/ then click on "free downloads" then search for "Laura Cantrell" or "Susan Werner" you'll find what you're looking for. Anyway, this is straying pretty far from the subject of Susan Werner, so, Cheers, Earl Higgins HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Nov 2002 19:08:28 -0500 From: "Tim Dunleavy" Subject: Re: Mp3s Thanks for the MP3 stuff. Regarding Laura Cantrell - I saw her open for Elvis too, and loved her. I seemed to notice a strong Nanci Griffith/Kate Wolf influence. I've been playing her two CDs a lot the last few weeks; great stuff. She's also a DJ on WFMU in Jersey City. And hey, her website has MP3s you can download!! Go to www.lauracantrell.com and go to the Downloads page. Download the song "Not the Tremblin' Kind", and it'll give you a good idea of what she's all about. - -Tim - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Earl Higgins" > Incidentally, if you go to the Amazon downloads, don't leave without > checking out Laura Cantrell. She has a new CD of movie themes, and she's got quite a good voice. She also has two other CDs out, one is exclusively Henry Mancini songs. I heard Monica on a late-night talk show here in LA hosted by Doug MacIntyre. He's a very bright, knowledgeable guy, and he's also a big fan of jazz singers. (I think he's also a television writer.) He often has jazz singers as guests during his first hour. I'm going to send him some of Susan's romantic songs. I think he might like them.
