This time its from MarketPlace on NPR and you have to follow the link below to listen to it. They also asked for people to write in with their favorite radio stations and what they like about that station. http://www.marketplace.org/shows/2002/10/08_mpp_Bordal.html Marketplace: The Life of the DJ in the Brave New World of Commercial Radio Tuesday, October 8, 2002 Listen to this segment in RealAudio In 1996, the Telecommunications Act semi-deregulated the radio industry and thus were born Clear Channel (at least the behemoth that goes by that name today), Infinity Broadcasting, and other radio conglomerates. These companies are now allowed to own many more stations in one market than was previously the case. And, they own hundreds of stations across the country. Many critics liken the new radio landscape to the appearance of fast food, but there's a crucial difference: In the land of radio, there's only so much airspace. The giant corporations have all but bought up the available real estate, and as a result, we're all stuck with a steady diet of KMcD and KFC and KBrK-FM. But we the listeners aren't the only ones who are unhappy about the new state of radio. The quality of life for many a radio employee has been "negatively impacted" since their independent companies have been bought up by "Big Brother" -- the DJs, not least. The cost-cutting efforts of the new corporate culture results in far fewer DJ jobs -- a lot of local on-air personalities have disappeared -- and the jobs that are left pay less and are far less rewarding. Doesn't it seem that the country's new penchant for large consolidated corporations in deregulated markets (whether radio or energy or banking or other service sector businesses) invariably results in poor customer service, large unwieldy companies with uptight work environments that no one enjoys working in, and poor financial performance? I guess radio's no different. The only positive in this story seems to be the many millions in stock options being exercised by a few folks at the very top. Oh, and those few proud holdouts -- stations and DJs -- who still provide a rewarding and independent listening experience. Bless you! I've put a couple of links here to related stories. Please let us know about the great hidden radio treasures still dotting our landscape. If you've still got a good, independent music station or DJ in your town (or have found a great Webcaster), let us know about them at letters@marketplace.org We'll post the responses, so check back. I look forward to hearing from you.
