I'm sure there will be lots of input, so I'm opening up a real can of worms here, but anyway....what CD would you recommend if I can only afford to get ONE? I want to get some of her best songs. I'm sure I'll get some flak for this, and IMHO, Dar doesn't know how to write a bad song, but I would recommend "Out there Live" for the following reasons: It has songs from all of her CDs It has 19 tracks (17 songs and 2 intros), which is a whole lot of music It has Dar with live touring band, and Dar solo. It has some Dar commentary, not a whole lot, but enough to give you some sense of who she is. The band on this CD kicks major butt. Like Susan, Dar is best experienced live. Now of course, having said that Dar doesn't write bad songs, it follows that some of my favorites aren't on it. By the same token, the arrangements are different than on the studio CD's, so you won't feel like your buying the same stuff when you buy all of her CDs, which you will probably decide to do soon after you hear her work. But you don't have to leave the choice up to others. Just surf on over to http://www.bulletproofstore.com/ and listen to the sound samples, and decide for yourself. And if you're into on-line buying, it would be great to patronize Patty Romanoff's store at Bulletproof. Patty runs bulletproof, and manages the Nields, and she is very cool.
