It's just plain rude to repost an e-mail whether privately sent or posted to another discussion grop, without the author's permission. Ron's been singled out here, but others have done similar things in the past, and I'm sure some of you (you know who you are) have gotten mail from me about it. The only reason I did't respond right away was that Benay jumped in. My apologies to Benay and to the rest of you, stop fighting and go to your rooms to think about it :-) Charlie who's completely shagged out from a 92 hour work week. IMHO, Joni has done more for the current crop of singer/songwriters than anyone else vis-a-vis decontructing and reconstructing the guitar as a companion to the voice. Her sound alone is widely present in much of the music we hear today. Playing in over sixty tunings, she has pushed the limits of the sound that can be produced by the guitar. Last I heard, she was using a Roland VG-8 and a Parker Fly with a midi converter to accomplish tuning changes, as well as textural pallettes. All those guitarists who use the weird tunings owe a debt to her, since she probably invented the tunings they use. Any guitarist would be well served by surfing over to http://www.jmdl.com where you can find the tunings, tabs, lyrics, and lots more about Joni. This is also the home page for the Joni Mitchell discussion list, which resides on the smoe server. You can also visit http://jonimitchell.com for additional info on Joni. These two resources comprise perhaps the most massive compilation of information on any singer/songwriter. Be warned, you could spend days at these two related sites and only scratch the surface. As for Dar and flames, I once had the temerity to state publically on the Dar list itself that "Dar is an ok finger picker, but somebody needs to pull her aside and show her some strumming tehnique" I refer to this as the second Dar flamefest :-) One member suggested that I do that myself. I love Dar, her music, her lyrics, her absolutely quirky view of the world. But she ain't no guitar wiz. It's precisely because of that, IMO, that she's acieved such a large following among aspiring s/s's. Her music is by and large very playable for relatively new guitarists, which is somethank that can't be said for Susan, although I found the tunes on NNF relatively playable. _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Jul 2002 09:31:55 -0400 From: "Charlie Sweeney" Subject: Re: Women axe-grinders HI all, I'm surprised no one has brought up Joni Mitchell as a guitarist. At the ripe old age of 37, I have TONS of what I call "vinyl assets" (including approximately a thousand 33 1/3s, forkliftfuls of 45s and several dozens of 78s), which I continue to purchase. I also have casefuls of cassettes, ample 8 tracks (and a way to play em!) and SO many CDs it's astounding! But entirely seriously, relocating to Arizona or not, I don't think I could ever get rid of them. True, I'll probably never listen to every single one of them, but to me, they're priceless. Great photos, Jeff! Much better than mine. Summerfest was great fun (though I'm waiting for the slaps to rain down from Kellie and Mosh since woj and I didn't show up on Sunday). It was a well-organized festival, with great food (the scallops were everything I'd heard they would be, yum!) and the big tents over all of the stages were a very good thing. Susan was well received by the crowd, particularly at the workshops. I like to watch people experience her performance for the first time -- it's always entertaining. For example, I particularly enjoyed the older couple in front of us at the last workshop who were marveling to one another at how Susan could just jump in on another person's song and play it "like she already knew the song". The day was too short, though -- in addition to all the great music, there were tons of vendors and a schooner tour and all the other stuff in the historic district of New Bedford, but because the schedule was packed with music to hear every minute we were there, we didn't get to see any of the other things. It was great to see all of the other believers in attendance ... but where were you on Friday at the Acoustic Cafe?! Susan did a great show there, too. The opener never showed up so she did two sets, the first on guitar and the second on piano. The Cafe was nice and full, and she got a great response there as well. I hope she comes back there sometime. Any believers going to Falcon Ridge? So what if Susan's not going to be there ... it's a tradition! :) ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ============================================== HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Jul 2002 20:49:32 -0400 From: "tony'a lemos" Subject: Women axe-grinders janis Ian, janis Ian, janis Ian!!!! another one of my favs - -tony(a) _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Jul 2002 19:13:21 -0700 (PDT) From: simona loberant Subject: Re: Women axe-grinders ALthough I won't comment on particular performers I will say that if a person just looks at the folk circuit (looking at every genre will take faaaar too long) that there are some musicians who are techinically very gifted and others who are rather mediocre. At New Bedford I did have a discussion wtih some folks from this list about how some performers seem to relie on the same few melodic tools and never really stray from those which makes their music start to sound stale and cause the audience to lose interst. A couple of these artists were at NB so you can probably figure it out without me saying anything. On the other hand there are some great artists who offer so much fresh material and combine techical prowess with beautiful lyrics and lovely voices. I would very much suggest that among the very brand new artists out there that if you see the name Vanida Gail somewhere you go and see her. I'd suggest buying her CD, but the chic doesn't have one yet (she's that new). And for just pure instrumental magic the duo of Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer should satisfy those who want to get a lot of variety and techinical ability. On the subject of Dar, I must admit that I agree. She plays well and her lyrics are the kind of complex poetry that appeals to people looking for respit from popular music. I myself have been able to learn most of her repetoire on teh guitar with very little formal training. I would suggest the Indigo girls as a group who not only display good technique but also complicated lyrics and hidden meanings. Can anyone argue with a line like "Upper echelons of mediocrity" ?! I forgot to mention that at Susan's Milwaukee gig in June, I noticed there was one woman who could not take her eyes off Susan for a second! I watched her gaze at Susan unblinkingly for minutes on end. A great big THANK YOU for the pix, Jeff! Like folks have said, it IS great to put faces with some of the names. It was also great seeing Susan (y mi otra amiga, Kellie... que tal, guapa?) again... even if it couldn't be in person!
