I'm the author of the forwarded Lucy-list post mentioning Susan, and I had no idea that posting would show up in its entirety here...I haven't happened to post here, though I've lurked for a while, and I'm a little concerned because even though that forwarded post was pretty positive overall, I feel as if I might have shown up as kind of snubbing Susan with such a heavily Lucy-slanted description of the Englewood show and my little joke about wanting Susan to be Lucy. Maybe if I truly DIDN'T like Susan much, I wouldn't care, but I honestly do deeply enjoy Susan's music and respect her talents hugely and think she's an amazing performer---and now that I've appeared on this list, albeit without knowing that I would, I just want to set the record straight on that. It's true that Lucy Kaplansky has a special place in my heart for a number of reasons, and I've been following her and her music for much longer than I've even known about Susan, whom I only really discovered about a year and a half ago. But Susan is right up there among my favorites---otherwise I wouldn't have been on this list at all---and if some of my Lucy-list posting seemed to indicate otherwise, well, it was a LUCY-list posting! Maybe somebody who was at the show who came into it from a broader perspective to start with could give a more balanced description of the show...Sharon actually did pretty well at that... Anyway, I just thought that introducing and explaining myself was in order... I think it came across that you liked Susan, but you liked Lucy more, and there's nothing wrong with that. I am never thrilled when Susan shares the bill, and I'm sure we can all understand your wanting to hear all Lucy. Why some people like one artist more than another is based on personal sensibilities and a whole lot of other stuff. I mean, maybe an Iowa farmer ran over your wagon when you were young, and a Jewish therapist in NY finally helped you get over it. Then it would be entirely logical for you to be a Lucy fan. On the other hand, I was nearly driven insane by a line of Jewish therapists and was sent to a farm in Iowa to recover by getting back in touch with the earth and watching Bridges of Madison County 3,000 times. I forwarded your post from one of your fellow list members who sent it to me. So now you've learned... There are no secrets in cyberspace. And you never know who's listening. And there's a network of spies everywhere. OK, now I'm going to take a risk. The other night, while watching Dar Williams, I noticed that most of her guitar playing is fairly simple, especially when compared to Susan. A few moments later, the fellow next to me, who was at his first folk show, said, "What a great guitar player Dar is." I had already told him about Susan, whom he'd never heard of, and I thought that telling him about Susan's guitar playing at that moment would just be too, too much. So I just turned and smiled. After the show, I bumped into a friend of mine who said, "Still, no one compares to Susan." I have roughly 100 albums, boxes of tapes, and at least 1000 CDs. I have relocated many times in my life, and I am just sick of hauling this stuff around. I went through the process of weeding out my vinyl and CDs last night, and in about 20 minutes I'm heading to a local shop that says they buy used music.... I have 280 records and about 100 CDs for them. I know there are records in my collection that are worth a mint on ebay, but I just haven't got the time. Going through those albums last night was an amazing experience - I was 14, 15, 16, 20 - my entire life chronicled by those records. Who I was, where I was, who I was with. I felt REALLY old when I finished. I'm just praying that the music shop guy won't start laughing..... One is about a friend moving away and leaving you behind, and I belive the title is "Taking it all to Tennessee". The other one is just about the pleasures of coming home after being away - a bit of prodigal son - and includes the line "you're always welcome as the flowers on ??????" - I think the missing bit is prob the song title. I do NOT mean the old standard, "mockingbird hill", but the line is derived from that song. Anybody give me any names and CD titles to go with these snippets? Thanks so much!
