At first, all I could think of was the vast catalog of unrecorded material that Susan has, most of which will probably never be recorded, and how just plain silly it has always seemed to me that she repeated ANYTHING from studio CD to studio CD. I've always been a little miffed that she even puts covers on her CD's. Again, with her vast repertoire, I'd prefer she keep the covers for the concerts, and give us all her when she goes into the studio. (a side note: I saw an Ann Arbor legend this weekend, guy named Dick Siegel. Went to the show solely on exposure to one CD, entitled 'Snap'. He's been around forever, heard his name a lot...so finally checked him out. He was phenomenal. Really something else. He had two CD's for sale, I bought the one I didn't have, 'Angels Aweigh'. And of the two very long sets he did, he did exactly 5 songs from his two CD's. The rest was not available on any recording...and I have to say I was really disappointed....found myself, after every song I didn't recognize, picking up 'Angels Aweigh' to see if it was on there...and being disappointed when it wasn't. Some of his stuff just blew me away, and was the kind of stuff you just wanna listen to again and again....and can't, cuz it's not been captured anywhere. I feel the same way about Susan's stuff...I want it all!!!!) I digress. While I would be almost disappointed to not hear 'Cole Porter' in concert - I have never NOT heard it (every show - I think it's maybe 13 or 14 - I've been to), I question the need to have it be recorded yet again. But......and here's where I'm really torn.....I guess I'm really a Believer when it comes to the continuity of the Romantic Song Cycle. And so, I guess if it truly is Susan's intent to capture the entire saga from start to finish on disk, the absence of 'Cole Porter' and 'Much at All' would be noticeable, at least for me. So I guess I'm willing to overlook the inclusion of a coupla older, previously recorded songs on a new CD in the interest of completing the Cycle...though what I'd much rather see is two brand new tunes that make the same contribution to the story line. I know that I don't feel strongly enough about it to NOT buy the CD based upon what it contains, Cole Porter or not. I'd buy anything she ever recorded, even if she decided to start covering ABBA. And in a completely unrelated aside: I am hosting singer/songwriter David Roth in a house concert on Monday July 22. I am in Lansing, Michigan. Actually I came to the U.S. for the Campfire festival ( and seeing / meeting up with Kellie there) and some other music. It was *so* wonderful. So I went to both Susan/Richard Shindell shows at the Bottom Line. The last time I had the pleasure of seeing her was IIRC just a year ago in the Boston area. Susan was incredible. This was the first time I saw her with a full band and it was amazing. And I loved the way how she interacted with the band. She is such a nice and generous person. Hey and Susan's still getting better and better and she enjoyed the shows immensely. Some time in the future I really should follow her around from show to show... I'm afraid I'm getting really obsessed now;-) This is what I do remember from the setlist: Stationery Shades of Gray Yellow house Big Car Misery ( with a hysterically funny intro) Mary's of St. Regret (early show - without band; the 1st time I heard it live ( I was really grateful;-) quite different compared to the recorded version ) Barbed Wire Boys ( late show) at least 2 or 3 jazz-folk like songs on the piano that were completely new to me next time I should write down the setlist... but here are some photos for your viewing pleasure: http://www.pbase.com/acoustic317/susan_werner__richard_shindell best, ~Reinhard ===================================================== "It's my job to disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed people" Woody Guthrie HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Jun 2002 14:19:59 -0400 From: Steve Murphy Subject: RE: My Left Hand - The Musical (?!?) So here's the thought. For those folks who really want to see the videos and are capable of downloading and running quicktime 5 I would be more than willing to offer these in some way. They range in 3MB to 10MB (total of 61MB). I just don't know what the best way to this is. I don't know if these files are too big to be hosted on a website for download or if the only way would be to FTP them or send them via a CD. If anyone has suggestions please share! I would be more than happy to send the files via AOL Instant messenger to anyone with a fast connection. My username is SimonaL and if I'm online then I'd be more than happy to transfer them over.
