I haven't been keeping up with the digests lately, but I wanted to report in about Susan's concert last night. It was well attended... Lots of people, lots of kids. Susan looked good, gray pants and a rosy pink satin shirt that was "unbuttoned" at the cuffs (could have been a french cuff shirt without cuff-links which is why I put unbuttoned in quotes). Her set list sounds very familiar from reading the last two digests. I didn't write down the songs, not knowing the names of them all, but it sounds about right. I just loved the version she did of Starting Over. It was amazing. There was only just enough hints of John Lennon in it so you would recognize it, but it came across as a totally different song. Like I said, I loved it. This was my first concert in a long while. It was nice to get back out again. I didn't see anyone I knew, but I'm sure that there were believers out there. Looking forward to Philly Folk when she'll be back again. I copped a version of it myself, and have been playing it in a dropped D tuning for 30 years. Most of Mary's work has been re-released on CDs. Look her up, you'll like her. Lennon once called it his "Elvis Orbison" song, and it definitely doesn't sound like that the way Susan does it. As Candy said, a complete reimagining of the song. And as with "Help!", Susan has found more under the surface than you realized was there. I didn't get to hear Susan's interview on the Gene Shay show yesterday -- does anyone know what she did? - -Tim HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 May 2002 16:56:18 -0700 From: "Ron Rosen" Subject: Re: Beatlefest (was concert under the stars....) Well, when it comes to the Beatles, those of us who were old enough and were paying attention probably realized it was there. ;-) If anything, when listening to Beatle songs, we realized more was there than probably was there. ;-) ;-) Anyone besides Charisse ever hear the Mary McCaslin version of Help? And just for the heck of it, here's Paul McCartney's "Here Today (Song for John)": And if I said I really knew you well What would your answer be? If you were here today. Well, knowing you You'd probably laugh and say That we were worlds apart. If you were here today. But as for me I still remember how it was before And I am holding back the tears no more I love you. What about the time we met? Well I suppose that you could say that We were playing hard to get, Didn't understand a thing But we could always sing. What about the night we cried? Because there wasn't any reason left To keep it all inside, Never understood a word But you were always there with a smile. And if I say I really loved you And was glad you came along, Then you were here today, For you were in my song Here today.
