'twas fun seeing susan without the band for the first time in a while. my brain had kind of gotten in the mode of hearing stationary and shade of grey with a rhythm section, so i had to readjust. i don't really know if she plays the songs any differently solo or not, but it seemed like she did. very nice to hear bad president again. i think the last time i heard that was a couple years ago, also at the iron horse. billy joe is still cool. after playing are you lonesome tonight, she announced she had three songs left which would be a perfect end for the show, without an encore. when the audience moaned, she jokingly threatened to just end the show right then ("don't make me turn this show around!") but compromised by agreeing to go off-stage for a minute after the first of the three songs and leaving the rest for the encore. starting over was really well done (though it took me a second to figure out what it was) and fit very nicely in the romantic song cycle, even though the cycle was pretty dismantled by the iron horse's schedule (there was another show later on that evening cutting the show down to about 80 minutes long all together). the audience was appreciative, but slim -- there were a few open tables downstairs and most of the loft was empty. a little surprising as the last time she was at the iron horse, i seem to remember it being quite full. woj HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 May 2002 10:12:27 -0700 From: "Ron Rosen" Subject: Crawling Back to the Past Back in 1965, the year a certain songstress was born, I was a junior in high school in San Mateo, California (boyhood home of Patriots' quarterback Tom Brady and Steelers wide receiver Lynn Swann.) This was the time of the burgeoning folk revival and the beginnings of folk rock and the San Francisco sound. There was a small coffee house in Burlingame called the Golden Lamp upstairs in a small two-story office building. It was probably there onIy a year or two. I remember going there one night and seeing a great banjo player named Chuck McCabe and a jug band called the San Andreas Fault Finders. I think that was the only night I went there, but for some reason I always remembered it and in recent years sometimes wondered if Chuck McCabe had anything to do with McCabe's Guitar shop in LA (he doesn't). Fast forward to 2002. I am directed by a post on another list to a website that mentions going to the Golden Lamp and banjo player Chuck McCabe. I get out my trusty google search engine and find out that Chuck is still around, living in the Los Gatos area, writing songs, playing guitar and banjo, and making CDs. I send him an email and he replies within an hour. He tells me that back in those days he was in a band called the Slippery Rock String Band, whose bass player had just been released from Jefferson Airplane to make way for the later-to-be-legendary Jack Casady. They travelled all over and even did some USO shows in Asia. He also mentions that Peter Albin of Big Brother and the Holding Company (Janis Joplin's band) as well as a current member of Marley's Ghost also played at the Golden Lamp back in those days. The internet is truly amazing. Chuck concluded his email with, "Do me a favor (and yourself)... remember to cherish every musical moment you have... a club, a living-room impromptu solo... most folks don't get the opportunity to see what we do. Somebody gave us a gift, and I hope to love it as much as it deserves to be loved." I really do want to say something about the full band shows (and in particular the debut of Susie Chanteusie at Wolf Trap last month), but not now. :} Hopefully later this week I'll find some time under a rock somewhere. But I will follow up on woj's post about Friday night's Iron Horse show, just so I don't fall any farther behind. >a good show. I was noticing some differences here and there, particularly on "Philanthropy". Pre-band, she was playing every note herself on the piano - -- but this time, the piano part was a lot closer to what she plays when the bass and drums are with her, leaving more to the vocal line and to the general imagination. I think it worked just as well. ("Philanthropy" is my absolute favorite of all her piano songs, by far. Wow.) >very nice to hear bad president again. i think the last time i heard that >was a couple years ago, also at the iron horse. billy joe is still cool. I just about *died* when she started playing that -- I thought that one was forever lost to the sands of time!! (Susan even allowed me a fangirl moment afterwards so I could thank her for playing it. :) What an incredible song. >after playing are you lonesome tonight, she announced she had three songs >left which would be a perfect end for the show, without an encore. when >the audience moaned, she jokingly threatened to just end the show right >then ("don't make me turn this show around!") but compromised by agreeing >to go off-stage for a minute after the first of the three songs and >leaving the rest for the encore. That was pretty funny. In fact, she was in fine form all evening -- very playful and goofy. (Someone on another list who had never seen her before said he was laughing so hard he almost snarfed food out his nose several times. :) >the audience was appreciative, but slim -- there were a few open tables >downstairs and most of the loft was empty. a little surprising as the last >time she was at the iron horse, i seem to remember it being quite full. Last time, she sold the place out. I've never seen the Iron Horse as empty as it was the other night. I have no idea what was going on, but it was pretty depressing to see. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html =====Next Up: Molly Zenobia 5/5/02===== HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ End of believers-digest V6 #96 ****************************** --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------- This has been a posting from the Susan Werner believers-digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe believers-digest" in the body of the message
