I heard the other day on the Pittsburgh independent radio station (WYEP 91.3FM) That Tom Paxton and Susan Werner will be playing the old 'burgh this summer for FREE on June 18th. Indigo girls will also be playing gratis on June 7th and other performers such as Norah Jones, Martin Sexton and lots of locals and others will be doing free gigs in between for the Three rivers arts Festival. ~simona Ron Rosen wrote: Tonight I saw Tom Paxton with Anne Hills accompanied by Fred Sokolow on mandolin, dobro, and banjo. What a show! Tom Paxton is a giant of the 60s folk scene having written such songs as The Last Thing on My Mind, Ramblin' Boy, Bottle of Wine, and What Did You Learn in School Today? Anne Hills has a great voice and who wrote some excellent songs that they did tonight. They also did songs by Malvina Reynolds ("God Bless the Grass" - about grass overcoming the cement of the sidewalk as a metaphor for truth spreading in spite of suppression), Richard Farina ("Birmingham Sunday" about the 1963 bombing of the Birmingham Baptist Church), Kate Wolf (A Link in The Chain) and Len Chandler, who was in the audience (Green, Green Rocky Road). This was a real throwback to the early days of 60s folk. Paxton wrote so many great folk standards, and the playing and singing by these three talents was excellent. If you have a chance to see this show, don't miss it. It was one of the best shows I've seen ! Thanks for the clue on the Paxton/Hills concert. I love them both, and am expecting to catch them on Friday in Baltimore. Sounds like they have added some songs to their repertoire.
