As many of you know she was planning a career in opera and then saw Nanci sing and the rest is history. She did a fabulous selection of her songs, old and new, and I was lucky enough to get a seat right next to the stage. After the concert, we talked about Nanci a bit and she said her songs "Last of the Good Straight Girls" and St. Mary of Regret" were particularly influenced by our hero. She said she met her once in Michigan and was at a loss of words because she admires her so. She would love to sing with Miss Nanci some day. Susan's road manager added that Susan is a major Nanci fan. Anyone seeing Susan in concert realizes that the loss of words part is hard to imagine. Nevertheless, Susan Werner is a charming woman, outstanding songwriter, with an incredible voice. See her if you get the chance. I don't even know if it was a Nanci song. I figured if Susan likes her I should check her out. I borrowed a bunch of her tapes from a friend and really liked her. In August of 1995 I went back to Nashville because I had liked it so much the year before, and because I had to go to Houston anyway to visit a friend who was undergoing major state-of-the-art cancer treatment at M.D. Anderson. Anyway, the day I arrived in Nashville, guess who was giving a free concert at Riverfront (?) Park -- Nanci Griffith. What a great show and a great coincidence. BTW, my friend beat all the odds, and is still alive and in remission seven years later. He was not supposed to survive, and was only hoping the Houston treatments would give him a couple more years. (And where's the eight bucks I sent him?) Hey, cut the guy some slack! He's been very busy. ;-) Ah yes, I did get some flack for jumping on his case on the list. I threatened to wear my cancelled check for $2 to the next Susan show. Still have it in a baggie ready to wear. The guy got all self-righteous and "threatened" to send me $2 by certified mail. Never did. Anyway, a friend made me an even BIGGER and BETTER Suze pin. I've worn it to a couple shows. Never pulled any Believers out of the woodwork, however. To do that, you have to go up to them and engage them in a long, meaningful conversation. I was in charge of artist hospitality, so I got to meet pretty much everyone in her entourage, too. The folks in her band were all very cool, but of Ms. Griffith herself all I can say is one word: Diva. I'm glad Susan doesn't take after her in *that* regard! (That day I also got to meet Mr. Dave van Ronk, which was a wonderful experience. I feel honored and privileged to have had the chance to meet him, at what turned out to be the last festival appearance of his life.) ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ======================================= (: New England Patriots - Super Bowl XXXVI CHAMPIONS :) HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Apr 2002 21:02:58 -0500 From: Roy Langhans Subject: Re: believers-digest V6 #74 > so, who all's going to the shows ar the barns at wolftrap next > weekend? > > woj, meth, kellie and I will be at both shows, and mosh will be > there saturday. > > If you're anywhere close to DC/VA, you should really try to come. > friday has ellis paul opening, and susan playing with her band. > Saturday is jazz night, with susan doing only piano stuff with > the band... > Which reminds me . . .
