But the question of what is the thing that the narrator and billy joe throw over the side of the bridge? The two thoughts in the office were a baby or some evidence of some crime. I'm asking this list b/c I bet most of you guys have heard the song Ode to Billy Joe by Bobby Gentry. I also think that SW did a cover of it at Falcon Ridge... of course there have been so many covers of this song. I own a great version of it by a chicago jazz singer named Patricia Barber. She's good, not Ella Fitzgerald or anything, but pretty good nonetheless....... but I return to my question, since this song is supposedly based on some real event does anyone know the event? or what was thrown over the side? ~simona Simona L. Ah the Ode to Billy Joe eternal question. This was, of course, discussed a lot when the song was a hit in 1967. And yes, Susan has been doing this song of late. There was some discussion of a baby - but if it was a baby, wouldn't the family have noticed that the narrator was pregnant? Possibly not, because we know of many news stories where young women seem to successfully hide their pregnancies from their families. But why would Billy Joe kill himself over a baby? That's not a typical thing for a guy to do. Also, if you throw a baby off a bridge, it's bound to be found at some point. Conventional wisdom is that it was a ring - maybe an engagement ring - and that the narrator broke up with BJ and he killed himself as a result. The beauty of it is that it's just a song and it could be anything and we'll never know. I never heard that this song was based on a "real" event, other than that there are many such events that occur in life. I'm sure there are many ideas about the song on the internet. Maybe you could do some research and report back if you find anything interesting. She will be playing in the Mass area next weekend too, but she said she was flying home to Chicago in between! She asked us what was in the news and the audience answered "you are!" citing the house-concert story and the Boston Herald review among others. Discussion of the Oscars and plastice surgery lead to a decision to play "au Naturelle" which I haven;t heard for about 5 years. Other new/old stuff: St Mary's made the play list, much to my DD's delight. The only new-to-me piano song was "You're a dream", but she also played my favorites, "Tall Drink of Water", "Light Sleeper" and "It was So Nice". Last song of the regular set was "Great Out There" with the full guitar treatment, then encore's of "Movie of my Life" and a absolutely gorgeous version of "You're the Best Thing" which vastly improves the song over the slightly sappy, insipid Gladys Knight version. And that's all folks! Any NH-ish believers planning on going back to the Muse to see Ray Wylie Hubbard?
