Susan had to sing without a mic and the guitars unplugged. Only the electric piano could be plugged in. It was a fairly small crowd and it's a small room, so Susan was able to be heard fine without a mic, although Jane was worried that she might strain her voice. At the end of the show Susan said she was going to sing more quietly for that reason. Jane said tonight at McCabe's will be "big" because some LA industry types will be there, but Jane assured me they won't be as big as Jennifer Aniston. New work in progress: You're A Dream, in the romantic song cycle category. Last night Susan sang Late for the Dance and So Nice (Seeing you Again). At one point Susan's capo got mess up so she stopped playing the guitar while she fixed it, but she kept singing so that there was no break in the song. Very impressive. During Shade of Gray, a lady's cell phone went off. It wasn't too loud, but the lady, who was not near the stage, answered it. Without missing a beat, Susan began to ad lib to the effect of "people calling on the cell phone, always calling on the cell phone with another point of view. Just turn it off turn it off turn it off because they ain't got nothin' to say. Just another point of view." Great. After she sang Nefertiti's Dream, she commented that the guitar strumming was inspired by Ritchie Havens. A guy in the front row had no idea who Richie Havens is, so Susan said he was the first performer in the Woodstock movie, haven't you seen Woodstock?" Then the subject of boomers came up and Susan said, "Don't get me started on that!" Someone said, "Oh sing it." So, without planning to, Susan sang the Boomer Song. Making comments about how boomers can't hear anymore and how their (our) speech is incoherent. At the conclusion of the Boomer Song Susan said she was going to take a little break and come back and do some stuff on the piano. She asked if people felt she had done enough songs on the guitars. At this point, a boomer in the audience who shall remain nameless said, "Did you do the Boomer Song yet?" This ended the first set with a big laugh. Encores: Ode to Billy Joe, mostly spoken except for the last line of each verse. What a well-crafted story that song is. Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me - the Gladys Knight and the Pips song from 1974! I've got 'em both worked up, and they're in the same tuning (although capo'd differently) with similar chords -- but I still occasionally get certain chords switched, dammit.... Don't you just love her ad-lib ability??? A bit more serious than usual. There were a couple of celeb fans of Susan there. The audience was wild with applause even before the first song and after each song. Two standing ovations. They turned the lights up after the first encore, otherwise there would have been a second one. Susan was very happy that the Iowa Hawkeyes beat Indiana. Said she almost got hoarse yelling at the TV. She did a tiny bit of the Iowa fight song at someone's request, and added it to Cole Porter. Other Highlights: Ode to Billy Joe made it into the first set, not just an encore. She did Stay on Your Side of Town, which was the first time I've heard it. Also did Philanthropy on the piano. Last time it was on guitar. The romantic songs are approaching being equal in number to the guitar songs. It used to be that there were only 3 or 4 piano songs per show. Now it seems like 6 or 7 or more. After the show, as Jane and friends were packing up gear and Susan was hanging out, she handed her Jenkins guitar to a young man. A 20-something woman began to sing Big Car for Susan as the young man played guitar. Susan jumped in on piano from time to time. Great fun. Susan keeps mentioning that Big Car hit the pinnacle for a song when it was played on Car Talk.
