Stationary would >make a >great ice skating routine. Two simple reasons: 1.) Nobody in the skating world knows who Susan Werner is. 2.) More importantly, music with lyrics is banned from Olympic competition. You'll hear singing in the music used in the exhibition performances from time to time, but never in the competition itself. Some of the other international competitions have relaxed their rules to allow it (I've heard Peter Gabriel, Sarah McLachlan and Kate Bush music used at times), but the Olympics are still pretty set in their ways about that sort of thing. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ======================================= (: New England Patriots - Super Bowl XXXVI CHAMPIONS :) HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Feb 2002 12:20:29 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: Sorry for Garbled Post Hi, Charlie responded: >Actually, only list members can access the list, but I >know y'all are scrupulous. Yes, and that is the heart of the problem I was alluding to. It was watching the exhibitions last night, which did have vocals, that prompted my post. There is a skater that uses a very inspiring song by a female singer as her signature number, but I can't think of the singer, the song, or the skater - or whether I saw it on a professional or amatuer ice skating telecast. Maybe someone recalls - it's a very inspiring song. I loved that song, whatever it was and whoever sang it. I recall the refrain lyrics said something about 'golden fields'; it added to the beauty and tragic nature (though 'tragic' is not exactly the word I'm looking for) of her exhibition skake despite the fact that as hard as she'd worked to earn a gold medal she brought home the bronze. The date is approaching ... just dropping in a reminder that our next house concert is coming up next Sunday! COLLEEN SEXTON Sunday, March 3 at 4 pm After Trina Hamlin was here last month, I got an email from a friend of hers offering to stop by and play sometime. I've heard so much good stuff about Colleen Sexton, of course I jumped at the chance. Martin's little sister has been making quite a name for herself lately. She was part of the _Respond_ compilation of Boston area folk musicians, has been nominated for a Boston Music Award, and recently put out a great CD simply called _Colleen Sexton Live_, which was itself recorded at a house concert. The reviews (rightly) rave about her strong, rich voice and jazzy, bluesy arrangements. She's guaranteed to put on one of the best shows we've had here. "Colleen Sexton is one of the top young talents of the coffeehouse circuit, with a supple voice and a pop/r&b bent reminiscent of brother Martin." -- Daniel Gewertz, Boston Herald "Colleen Sexton is one of the region's shining stars." -- Stu Fox, Ithaca Times "With a touch of jazz and a lot of the blues, Sexton's supple alto soars with passion and energy." -- R.B. Schwartz, Music Matters Review For more info on Colleen, including sound samples see http://www.colleensexton.com. As usual, the suggested donation is $10. We'll have munchies to much on, drinks to drink, and a good time will be had by all. To reserve your spot(s), please e-mail meth@smoe.org, or call (203) 776-9325. Hope to see a bunch of you here! Colleen deserves a full house at her first show in New Haven, so get your reservations in now... ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ======================================= (: New England Patriots - Super Bowl XXXVI CHAMPIONS :) HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Feb 2002 14:21:37 -0800 From: "Ron Rosen" Subject: Re: Hold On Both Hands, Don't Let Go Fields of Gold is a good song, and this is a fun discussion, but I don't think it's the song I'm thinking of. On the late-night talk shows, for example, they caption the lyrics to the songs the musical guests sing. This has come in quite handy when someone who has rather unintelligble lyrics has been on. Also, if you're watching a show that uses a lot of background music (such as _Roswell_ or _Felicity_), you can often find out what song is playing without having to wait for the info to show up on a fan website or something. Captioning can also greatly enhance the amusement value of a show. I'm thinking particularly of the late, great _Xena, Warrior Princess_, where all the grunts and exclamations were captioned during the fight scenes. It was also useful for finding out what little asides were being whispered in some scenes. Captioning: it's not just for the hearing-impaired any more. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ======================================= (: New England Patriots - Super Bowl XXXVI CHAMPIONS :) HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Feb 2002 21:47:51 -0500 (EST) From: Leslie Dreyer Kalra Subject: RE: Hold On Both Hands, Don't Let Go On Sat, 23 Feb 2002, meredith wrote: > Captioning: it's not just for the hearing-impaired any more. > > It's also useful when you have a pay-channel (that you don't pay for) whose video bleeds through with white noise for sound.
