She once opened for Susan at the Circle of Friends in Franklin MA. Although we were all eager to see Susan, we still couldn't let Colleen go without an encore. Not often an opener gets an encore. She did this excellent rendition of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive". When Susan finally came one she said "I will Survive ... Wow! She's gonna make that song famous!". I get back on Monday, but here are some thoughts on this weeken's co-bill in Madison...you might also hear from Chuck Ellingson, as he and I met up at Susan's show and hung out last weekend. Yay! =) Sooooooo, Susan with Vance at Cafe Mon Martre in Madison, Wisconsin - a good time! Cafe Mon Martre is a smoky little jazz venue within walking distance of Madison's main drag - state street. When I walked in, just before the show started, Vance was onstage, and Susan was in the back yelling, "I'm gonna get ya some watah! Want some watah?" (water)...Vance yelled back and told Susan to join him up onstage, and they decided at the last minute to do a song swap format, so they were both onstage for the entire show. Quite often, Vance would play a two song medley, or the two hour dance mix of a single song, so Susan ended up with much less stage time than him, but overall the show was lots of fun. When Vance was playing, Susan jumped in on organ and guitar and vocals and went to town. She was very respectful of his stage time, and added bits and pieces that supported his performance. There were some really smokin' guitar solos and a lot of give and take between the two of them when they were doing Vance's material... Vance, on the other hand, seemed more intent at upstaging Susan. It felt almost uncomfortably like he had chosen that as his goal for the evening. At one point, he forgot to turn off his guitar while Susan was singing one of the ballads (i think it was St. Mary's of Regret). He started tuning his guitar at FULL VOLUME over the song. He also interrupted Susan repeatedly, on different songs, *after* she had already started a song, to tell a joke or make some other inane comment. At one point, he stepped in front of her and leaned into her microphone (even though he had his own, and it was LIVE) as she started to sing, "In the Mood for Love", and said, "Stop it. We have to tell them where the CDs are." While I enjoyed Vance's material, and had a wonderful time overall at the show, these little things for me distinguished the two performers. Susan was at all times the respectful professional - she was still hilarious and certainly got in her digs - but she made sure to do it at the right time, i.e. NOT while Vance was performing. Vance was disrespectful, thinking it would be humorous to get in Susan's way...it got old. Funny maybe once. Not continuously... I was with a friend who had never heard Vance before, and she wondered if he had just wandered in off the street and up on the stage because of his behavior. It went beyond just distracting for her. She went away not liking Vance's stuff because of his inappropriateness. I've seen Vance before, and enjoyed his performances, but I was fed up too. I'm sure a huge percentage of the crowd didn't even notice all of this, annnnnnnnd, like I said, it was still very much fun. But Susan's new CD is out now, and it WASN'T available the last time she was in Madison and she didn't get much time to SELL it - to play her material and do her thing. She could have, even with the song swap format, if Vance had chilled out a bit. I'm sure she sold plenty anyway - when she did sing (sorry about jesus, barbed wire boys, tall drink of water, light sleeper, st. mary's of regret, stationary), she blew everyone away. Per usual. Anyway, Chuck! Report in. I know you didn't seem bothered by all of this as much as my pal Heidi and I were. Tell us your thoughts, and give us the set list, if ya wrote it down, coz I didn't!!! =) Later all - Kel HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Feb 2002 06:50:32 -0800 From: "Ron Rosen" Subject: Re: Susan/Vance In Madison Thanks for the review, Kel. Oh, I would have been so frustrated if Susan didn't get in her full set. I saw Vance at FRFF last summer. The first time, he was in a song swap with Susan, Jimmy La Fave, and Mary Gauthier. He did make fun of the other performers, even mimicking them, but he also praised their talent. And he was not able to do more than his share of songs. I came away thinking that he was hysterical, but he is mostly a stand-up comedian. Although his songs were good, I came away only remembering his schtick. The same was true of his solo set. During that, he spent a lot of time goofing on, and imitating the lady who was doing sign language. His imitations of her were also hysterical. I can remember jokes he told during both the song swap and his solo set, but very little about his music. Based on your comments, Kel, I would say that Vance is best seen solo or with another performer you don't care about that much, and be prepared for a night of comedy, with a little music thrown in to keep things honest. Yes, seeing Vance can be hilarious... but his guitar prowess and majestic voice stand on their own... Vance ran about 30 minutes long, which forced Susan to cut her set short. - -j HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Feb 2002 11:11:04 -0600 (Central Standard Time) From: "Laura Burgess" Subject: Stationary/Stationery Hey fellow Believers....funny story, which I'll try to keep from sounding= like a commercial.
