He made it easy - sent me the link, which I accessed with his help, and so, here in rural England I had a Sunday afternoon ( morning in NYC) listening to Susan talk in some depth about the NNF tracks. The interviewer was brilliant, sounded genuinely interested and asked intelligent questions, which is not always the case in local radio interviews....at least not here in the UK, where they can tend to be superficial and only interested in the gossip. Susan sounded relaxed, thoughtful, witty, open... and really exactly as I would have expected! I just wanted to join in and ask all sorts! She played some tracks live in the studio and sounded really impressive, - she finished with a wonderful and moving studio version of "May I suggest", telling us she wrote it after a friend's death, - not the friend from "I still believe" but someone she knew at the same time. So, a public thank you to Paul for giving me that chance and for sending me some great photos, also featuring himself and Susan ! Just happened to have kept her on my AOL list, so when I saw her come online, I sent her an IM... good timing, Rona, glad you caught the interview!!! Kaskela" Subject: SW @ Media, Pa Hi All- Sorry for the delayed posting, but here's a short review of Saturday night. Went to the show with Dick and Estelle and my wife Elaine. Met up with Tim between sets. For those of you who don't know the Media Theater is a beautiful old refurbished theater in the heart of Media, Pa. Probably seats about 500, not a bad seat in the house, great acoustics. 100% sold-out show. A benefit for the 900+ kids in the Media Athletic Association. Probably about evenly split between long time fans and civic minded donors. By the end of the night she had two standing ovations from everyone in the house! For the show a grand piano was brought into the house. However what made this show unusual was the addition of two New York sidemen who she said will be doing "some" shows with her. The addition of percussion and electric bass move her music into the middle area between Susie (live) and Studio Suse (on CD). And it is a special sort of show- the spontanaity and variety of a live show with the fuller lush sound and interplaying off others that musical colaboration bring. Here's the show- Stationary Shade of Gray Blue Guitar Little Yellow House Petaluma Afternoon St Mary's of Regret Misery/ Happiness Barbed Wire Boys Big Car Everybody's Talking All of the Above Tall Drink of Water Cole Porter Philanthropy No One Needs to Know Light Sleeper Much At All So Nice Seeing You Again I Can't Be New Standing In My Own Way May I Suggest The after show lines buying CDs and waiting to meet Susan just get longer and longer. Pretty soon I'll need an appointment just to get a minute to say hi. But for Susan's success I'll suffer even that! "Dat's All Folks!" Dave Keith and Steve- Please email me!! Dave was sitting up front, and had a much different experience than I did sitting in row O on the side. From the first song on, I found the vocals to be muddy, and her acoustic guitar just couldn't cut through over the bass and drums. What was unusual about the theater is that the sound board wasn't in the back of the house-- it was in the orchestra pit. During the first song, the sound guy walked up the steps out of the pit, walked halfway up the aisle, stood for about ten seconds to judge the sound, then walked back. This was repeated every two minutes during the first act of the show! And he never did get it right. Things did improve when the band left after the first four songs; when the band returned at the end of the first act, the sound was much better. The vocals cut through nicely on "Big Car," and she got a lot of laughs for it. But the laughs didn't come on "All of The Above"-- I think the song was too loud and fast for people to catch all the jokes. (During the intermission I passed two men in their sixties, one of whom told the other "The miking is horrible.") Things sounded much better in the second act, in which Susan spent all but one song seated at the piano; perhaps it was a better microphone, or simply that she was playing a louder instrument. (The odd thing is, this theater does have a reputation for good acoustics; the Philadelphia Orchestra played here a few years ago as a fundraiser when the musicians were on strike against the orchestra.) Susan's interplay with the other musicians was good, especially on "Philanthropy," which I had never heard before. A great twisting, turning jazz melody, which reminded me of Lambert Hendricks and Ross. The song started with Susan singing over a bed of cymbal crashes, with the rest of the band eventually joining in. I started smiling in the first line and never stopped!! Since I hadn't seen any advertising for this show, I didn't buy a ticket ahead of time, figuring there would be no problem getting a seat. Well, when I got there at 8pm, there were only about five tickets left!! Great to see such support. Susan is definitely loved here; she said that "Today I was driving on the Blue Route and a guy cut me off and didn't even give me a thank-you wave, and I knew I was home!" The Mayor of Media emceed the show; he introduced her as "a great songwriter, a great singer, a great musician... and if David Letterman or Jay Leno ever get sick of their jobs, she could take over for them with no problem!" The mix of solo songs and band songs worked well. I've seen shows where she was backed by a band the whole night, and I think this arrangement worked better. If you check Dave's set list below, I've added an asterisk to the songs where she had the band playing with her. Only regrest is that I didn't see Simona! Oh, and thanks to whoever forwarded my Erin Dilly story on to Susan. I hope Erin likes the autographed cd... :>) - -Tim - ----- Original Message ----- From: David S.
