Susan said... "I admire a lot of Jazz singers and composers like Cole Porter, Gershwin... I think I'm free to explore some of that because of how this new record is doing." How *is* the record doing? And how does this effect what Susan feels free to explore? The whole paragraph was: SW: I'd like to sing with Tony Bennett. He's a great ambassador for the old [Jazz] standards. Yeah, I'd like to hang with Tony for a while. I also want to make a record with Quincy Jones. With New Non-fiction, Jazz seems to really be my new area. I admire a lot of Jazz singers and composers like Cole Porter, Gershwin... I think I'm free to explore some of that because of how this new record is doing. "Some of that" therefore refers to jazz, which she refers to as her "new area." (Which of course it really isn't.) I think we can surmise that the new record (what's a record?) is doing well because she's saying that people seem to accept different things from her, as evidenced by how the new record is doing. Since the new record is doing well, she concludes that her audience will accept more exploration on her part - as she does more jazz. Now the grammar lesson: The word is AFFECT, meaning to influence. Effect means to bring about, cause. So is singing with Tony Bennet a mere fantasy or will Susan have her people send CDs to Tony Bennet saying, "I want to sing with you, Tony Bennet. Check me out." ?
