No one is living in misery here. What I laugh at so completely is the naive and almost childlike attitudes so prevalent on this list regarding the music business and the performers who make their living singing and writing songs. Susan, Dar, Lucy, and all the rest are business people first, performers second, and never forget the order. Sure what they create is art. But never forget they are selling it to you and you are buying it and they almost never give it away for free. (Charity shows? Try free P.R. that gets free newspaper and media mentions.) They aren't on stage singing and touring because they like you and want to see your smiling faces. They are performing in a bar or coffeehouse near you because they like to get paid and know your wallets are filled with eager cash just waiting to get plucked. Do you think singers make CDs so they can sign them for fans? They make them to sell them and make money. There is too damn much idol worship on this list and others like it. I'm sure Susan is a nice person but the next time she is performing near your home ask her to come to your house and "exhibit her art" and sing for you and fifty of your closest friends. Her first question to you will be not "Where do you live?" or "How do I get there?" but "How much are you paying?" There is nothing wrong with that attitude. Absolutely nothing wrong with it at all. But stop all this pretending that performers are like Johnny Appleseed dropping the seeds of art everywhere they go for the sake of love, peace, harmony, and fun. They live, prosper, and all too often fail in a cutthroat and highly competitive business known for its cruelty, Darwinism, and abusive recording label tactics. Enjoy the music but don't forget you wouldn't hear a note unless you could afford to pay. Art lives when only fed cold, hard cash. Anthony, What we laugh at is your constant carrying on about musicians after our money. That's commerce, honey. Susan would be writing songs and singing whether she made a ton of money or not. That's why performers have managers - because most performers are lousy business people. They go where their management books them. I disagree with you (there's a surprise) on the level of comprehension of the music business of most of the people on this list. Most of us do realize it is business. And if there are a few who want to believe otherwise, why does that bother you so much? ( I envision you running up to toddlers screaming "There is no Santa Claus, there is no Santa Claus!!" What I really suspect is that you may have tried music as a profession and did not have a successful career. You have all the earmarks of an angry critic. If I'm wrong, I apologize. It is a business full of disappointments and occasional glory - not for the faint-hearted. Charisse "sorry Rosen, I took the bait.." I would read the archives every so often and see what was being discussed. I am a longtime fan of Susan's but I have only been to a couple of concerts. I own all her CDs except for the newest one, and hope to soon rectify that. I decided to subscribe because I wanted to post in response to a post about what music we want to hear or buy or see in the coming year. I usually treat myself to about five or six CDs for my birthday and maybe a few more during the rest of the year. Most of my musical loves fall into the twangy folk section. And I am excited to be hear the new CD is a bit more roots and twang. Its surprising that there were no other lists posted. I think that in the digest the wishlist got stuck in the middle of some very negative posts. I am sure most people saw the first post and ignored the rest of the digest. That's too bad! This is my list: Numero Uno: New Non Fiction by Susan Werner Dos: Drum Hat Buddha by Dave Carter and Traccy Grammar Tres: Time Sex Love by Mary Chapin Carpentar Quattro: Time: The Revelator by Gillian Welch Cinco: New Favourite by Allison Krauss Seis: Voices on the Verge Live in Philadelphia I want to keep the list short. Otherwise I may spend more money than I have. Happy New Year believers. I hope that this year will be free of the negativity that plagued the past few months. To the gentleman who started the latest negative thread I only hope that you are able to see that life is too short to find fault with everything. It is a virtue to see the glass half full instead of half empty. Just got back from a walk down Colorado Boulevard. Did not see the Little Old Lady from Pasadena, but did see a sea of red Nebraska fans and only a handful of orange Miami fans. If the game tonight were decided by an audience vote, Nebraska would win easily. By the way, I found out that the game is not being played for free. This really has me disillusioned. I thought football was played for the love of the game. But what fun to return to find another post from Anthony. > childlike attitudes so prevalent on this list regarding > the music business and the performers who make > their living singing and writing songs. You know, Anthony, you make these statements, but you never back them up with examples of who on this list said what to lead you to your conclusions. For this I say, Anthony, you are a fool. > Susan, Dar, Lucy, and all the rest are business > people first, performers second, and never > forget the order. As Bobby Knight once said to a group of reporters, "I've forgotten more about this f*ing game that any of you are ever gonna know." I'll forget what I want, Anthony. > Sure what they create is art. Do you think you've just made a brilliant discovery? Although I doubt that "eager cash just waiting to get plucked" is indicative of the mindset of anyone I know on the folk circuit. I don't think Susan is a singing boiler room operation. The vendors on Colorado Boulevard right now have that mindset, however. >Do you think singers make CDs so they can > sign them for fans? Do you want us to hate them or feel sorry for them? What's your position? Who's doing all this pretending? Once again, Anthony, you've set up a straw man. > Enjoy the music but don't forget you wouldn't hear a > note unless you could afford to pay. I'll try to keep that in mind. Thanks for the tip. I've been away from the list for a year or two, but I'm back. Good to see some familiar names. Is The Bearded One still around? :) I'm thrilled to be hosting a Susan Werner house concert in Indianapolis on Saturday, January 19. We're hoping to have a full house (seating for 65), so I'm asking for your help by notifying anyone you know in the Indianapolis area who may be interested in seeing Susan. I've driven to other states to see Susan, but this is the first time I'll get to see her in my own state, and I'm very excited.
