Some of you may remember my posting about a SW promo CD I bought from eBay a few months ago; it had 3 songs on it that I already had on her regular CD's, so I decided to give it to the husband of the music director at our church, because he's a folk music fan and I've been telling him about how great Susan is. I took it to him on Sunday and gave it to him as he was setting up the sound system for the morning service (he's the "sound man") and he promptly put the CD on and broadcasted it through the entire sanctuary at nearly full volume! It was so awesome to hear "LOTGSG" coming through every speaker into the same room where I sing in the choir every week (the closest I'll ever get to being a vocal performer). I'm just glad that the promo CD didn't have "Sorry About Jesus" or "Ain't I Lonely Tonight"....hee hee hee.... It's how Susan's music can touch people from different walks of life. Over the last few years, I've reawakened my longtime love for theater, especially musical theater. In early 1999 I was at City Center in NYC to see a concert presentation of Rodgers and Hart's "Babes In Arms", and I was blown away by an actress/singer named Erin Dilly. A soprano with a dynamic stage presence, she immediately became my favorite young musical theater performer. Since then, I've gone out of my way to see each production she's been in, following her from a role in an off-Broadway comedy to the national tour of Cameron Mackintosh's "Martin Guerre" to her Broadway debut in Stephen Sondheim's "Follies." Her current role is as Nellie Forbush in the national tour of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "South Pacific." If you have a chance to see the "South Pacific" tour before March, when she leaves, do so-- you'll see what great star power she has, and what a big star she'll be. The tour opened in Atlanta tonight, and hits New Orleans, Texas, Nashville and Baltimore in the next few weeks. I had met her a few times at stage doors, but figured that even though we have friends in common, that would be the extent of my contact with her. Well, last Saturday, I got an email from Erin. She had started lurking on Broadway chat rooms and message boards, and wanted to thank me for all the rave reviews and other kind words I had posted about her over the last few years. I was very touched, and was wondering how to let her know. So in my reply to her, I included the lyrics to "May I Suggest." I attributed it to "my favorite singer-songwriter, Susan Werner," and wrote that I hoped the lyrics meant as much to her as to me. Here's what Erin wrote back to me: "I LOVE SUSAN WERNER.... I admit I only have LAST OF THE GOOD STRAIGHT GIRLS... what is that song from???" Folks, I ask you... WHAT are the odds?! I mean, how weird is it that one of my favorite singers is a fan of my OTHER favorite singer?! And most people haven't heard of EITHER of them!!!!! Signing off from Bizarro World, Tim P.S.
