From: owner-believers-digest@smoe.org (believers-digest) To: believers-digest@smoe.org Subject: believers-digest V5 #284 Reply-To: believers@smoe.org Sender: owner-believers-digest@smoe.org Errors-To: owner-believers-digest@smoe.org Precedence: bulk believers-digest Thursday, December 27 2001 Volume 05 : Number 284 In Today's believer's digest: ----------------- requests vs. call outs ["john vavrek" ] New Kennedys video "Nickeltown" [Harry A Keates ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 26 Dec 2001 07:13:18 -0800 From: "john vavrek" Subject: requests vs. call outs i remember Michael Hedges actually began playing Freebird at one point in his career! i have many wonderful concert recordings of him, and there is an interesting assortment of audience interaction. once, setting up for an encore, he said he didn't know what to play next and was greeted with a volley of shouts, for a couple minutes! he chuckled and said, "no, i said 'I,' me, I don't know what to play next!" one song has frequent brief pauses between guitar parts, and on each pause some audience member shouts something, just a whoop or a holler. it is SO obvious on the recording, but it might not be as noticeable in concert, in the group mind of a live concert. it's distracting as all get out! certainly those persons paid the price of admission, but so did everyone else. so, if everyone pays the same price, does everyone have the same rights? what about smoking? i would rather go without a few privileges than offend other paying customers. but how does that affect the performer? i saw Tool recently (with my son) and was amazed at how unruly the audience behaved. there were constant calls from the crowd. constant! except (perhaps) while the band was playing. i've been on stage when people were being enthusiastic, but it didn't feel like they were really paying attention to me or my group. i've also played to empty houses and having someone come in and ask for a song might have been welcome, but it might have been insulting if they didn't bother listening to what i had chosen to play. when i talked with Susan last fall, she mentioned the "hidden track" on Time Between Trains. i asked if thought she might play it in the second show, and she regretted that it had been a long time and she would probably stumble over the lyrics. so, who wants to go onstage and mess-up their own songs? and who can be prepared to play fifteen random requests out of a repertoire of over a hundred tunes every night? and still be trying to concentrate on writing more? maybe when someone is working on a few new songs, they tend to perform songs that engender the growth of the new ones? i agree, if you can let your requests be heard some other way, it's more pleasant for the rest of the paying public, and if you can express your requests with some well chosen words, it's probably more likely to be heard than a "call-out" between songs. john in oregon HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Dec 2001 23:42:35 -0500 From: Harry A Keates Subject: New Kennedys video "Nickeltown" Hey all, Just wanted to let you know that Pete and Maura have made a new video, for the song "Nickeltown," and it looks great (of course).
