And therein lies the problem, for me. I've been to shows where the performer took one spontaneous "Freebird!!" request from the audience and then the show just went to the dogs with idiots yelling out requests between each song thereafter. If one guy has an idea and acts on it, great - - problem is the other 25 boors that decide to tag along. On the other hand, to some people that's a "lively" show. Who am I to decide? I just usually avoid that kind of performance. So, my recommendation is try to find a way to get your request to the performer privately (e.g. leave a card on the stage - ask his/her manager, etc.) if they don't like call-outs. As to who's running the show at a concert, you probably wouldn't be too happy with a Joe Jackson show (as a previous poster noted, too). I think he'd throw you out for chewing gum! I remember one show I was at where he looked quizzically at the audience and said "is it hot in here?" After getting several affirmatives he pondered gravely for a bit, then turned to his band and said "You may remove your jackets". Anyway, there's a lot of differing opinions on what's a good show. Personally I hate it when an artist decides that they need to continuously "reinterpret" their work live, thinking it needs to sound as far from what they've recorded as possible. Other folks just love that sort of thing, saying if they want to hear the CD, they'll listen to it. Back to your restaurant analogy. If you're not happy with the fare, you're probably not going to get the menu changed, practically speaking. Patronize the musicians that perform the way you like - life's too short to pay for annoyance and you probably aren't going to get anybody to change their style. Happy Christmas everybody! When I sang back in the old days and did covers, I would happily take requests - I had a 500 song repertoire then. Now, I do my own material and a few carefully chosen covers. When you have as large an original repertoire as Susan, some tunes just don't get played often. She seems to be a perfectionist, and would not want to do a song she hasn't played in a while - nothing more embarrassing than forgetting your own lyrics. And you fall in and out of love with your own songs, too. There are tunes I just won't play out anymore - they are not up to the caliber of what I'm writing now. And yes, if you are going to request a song, between sets or prior to the show is the best time to do it. Yelling it out is a bit boorish unless the artist says "What do you want to hear?" I disagree with Anthony - the performer calls the shots at a show. If you don't like what you get in concert, go home and listen to your CDs.
