I think that's a good idea with most > artists. > > Yes, puh-leeze. I've been to my share of shows and agree Susan isn't into the "human jukebox" thing and she almost always politely ignores shouted requests. That said, I saw her at a house show a few weeks ago and as she was scurrying back for an encore she muttered something like "what to do?" and I (quietly) wisecracked "Hey, Carmen!". Now, I LOVE to hear that song, but I did it mostly to feed her a straight line and expected it to be dismissed. She immediately shot back "not without a couple of stiff drinks" or something similar and we all got a chuckle out of it. So, she did something, can't remember what, then disappeared upstairs only to be called back for a second encore....Carmen! When the high note came around, Jane (who usually does something to crack me up) pushed a chair in front of her and Susan hopped up on it as she hit it. Funny! So, for what it's worth, if you want to request a song I suggest you see her at a VERY small venue where she's a little looser about set organization and look for a cue that you can drop a hint - usually at encore time. If the audience is big enough that you didn't say "hi" to everybody before the show started, it's probably too big a show to be making requests and, as Charlie said, she's probably already got a set list nailed down on paper. And please, avoid shouting out a request during anybody's show. It's disruptive and puts the artist in the awkward spot of having to say "no" or just ignoring you. Of course if they ask, have one in mind and call it out...first in is usually first played! I thought at some point on the list, I read the preferred procedure for making a request of Susan. On 11/29 I saw her in Charlottesville, Virginia at Acoustic Muse. I had written out my request for ODE TO BILLY JO and as Jane was prepping the stage before the show, I, as non offensively as possible, asked if she could give my request to Susan. Jane said she could tell me right then if she would do the song or not. I told her it was ODE TO BILLY JO and that this was one of my favorite all time songs. Jane told me that Susan would love to do that song, so my hopes were pretty high. Of course, she didn't perform it and I was disappointed, I must admit, however I would never want to encroach on the freedom of any artist to do dang well what they please...so I got over it! I would have loved to have heard her version though. Anyway, this was another fabulous performance though she did strike me as being slightly tired. Her mumble/patter was not as audible as usual, maybe due to the venue's acoustics. She could've been experiencing the first inklings of that nasty flu that sidelined her a week later I suppose, and during her first encore (which was EVERYBODY 'S TALKIN') she broke a string and didn't do a second. I spoke with her afterwards and got her to sign my copy of NNF. I told her she just keeps getting better and better and she seemed genuinely pleased and said she's trying her best. And while I'm on the subject of "Jane", isn't she just the greatest?! I kept an eye on her during this performance, and not only did she tend to Susan's every need with the greatest of ease, but as she was sitting at the sound board making sure that everything was ok there, she stopped to watch and listen to Susan for a moment and was rocking and nodding and tapping with the music so enthusiastically, well, it was obvious that though I'm sure she's heard the songs a gazillion times, she really loves Susan's music. And when Susan noticed from the stage that Jane was doing this, they exchanged the biggest smiles and I thought man, what a great team! And while I'm here, let me just say that at first I was disappointed with NNF, mainly because I'm a bigger fan of the "jazzy" Susan and crisp, sharp sounding recordings, but now I love NNF and haven't stopped playing it since I got it! I feel like while some of you are calling it "Country Twangy", it strikes me more as "Electric Folk". I haven't heard some of those instruments since Bob Dylan picked up an electric guitar. The organ reminds me of Janis Ian's SOCIETY'S CHILD, the guitar, at times, takes my mind back to the Byrds, been a long time since I've heard a bass slapped and drums brushed... I think that at first listen, especially after the clarity of TBT, NNF may sound a little fuzzy, but after a couple of listens it becomes clear what's happening and, oh that Susan...what will she think of next?! Anyway, I especially love BARBED WIRE BOYS because my father is one and boy does she have a knack for hitting the nail on the head or what? Oh and also, count me in for liking EVERYBODY'S TALKIN'. On Mountain Stage did I hear that Susan has moved to Chicago? I was not aware of that. Please stop fighting, I don't like it. Happy Holidays Everyone! I get a kick out of looking at my poster of Susan for promos of "LOTGSG", where she's donning a black leather jacket, leggings, dark hair and dark sunglasses. Heck - I even remember seeing her in a SKIRT at a Tin Angel concert - makeup, and long curly hair! Such a "city girl" image that comes through on that album (LOTGSG) - but that album also suggests a longing to get out of the city, feeling like a stranger there, and now we see her in flannels and jeans - dressing up a bit for concerts, albeit an eclectic style. Her appearance has ebbed and flowed along with her music, and with her soul-searching. NNF is no less than a continuance of soul searching for whatever style seems to FIT her that year. I think the line "I'm going where the weather suits my clothes" could not be more fitting for her, esp. in light of her move from Philly to the Midwest. I like the sound of that song - kind of like a old car radio on a long road-trip. Regarding requests, I saw her perform at Appel Farm in rural NJ where I was working (I told this story here awhile back, but it's relevant again) on a beautiful, snowy, February night - she was late for her sound check due to the road conditions, so she was very flustered and took awhile to warm up and relax. But then she looked out over the audience in the middle of her set, paused, and said that this venue in this small farm community with four inches of new snow outside reminded her of Iowa - and I thought to myself "Oh - do Midwestern Saturday Night! Do Midwestern Saturday Night!" And sure enough, she launched into that beautiful balled which reminded me so much of my hometown in Nebraska. After the concert I told her how grateful I was that she played that song, my subliminal request, and we began a long discussion of our longings (and our hesitations!) to move back. Now she's in Chicago, closer to home, and the anxious feeling of "shouldn't I be settling down??" is very clear in NNF. And believe me, anyone who grew up in the Midwest but has some big-city experience knows the confusion this question creates. I can't wait to see what she'll do next... I suggested a live CD which he dismissed, but we talked for a while and he allowed as how it would be a good way to get some of the unrecorded tunes out into the public eye. The first song he brought up was Dow Re Mi. His main objection was that another live album would dilute the continuing impact of LATA. I reminded him that although the sucker still sells, it's been a long time, that with current technology which is much better, the cost of making such an album would be far, far less than doing a studio piece. So the seeds for this project have been planted. The current plan is for the next studio CD to be all piano. Other news: The official release of NNF as stated by Larry (Susan's manager) and by Herself is January 29th. Don't be surprised if Susan shows up at some of her upcoming gigs with a few additional players in tow. I don't have any concrete dates yet, but it's being played with and as soon as I know, you'll know. I heard a live version of "Attend the sky" today on WXPN in Philly. Afterwards, Micheala (the morning DJ)mentioned the release date of the CD and also that Susan will be a guest panelist on the XPN program First Impression on which new releases are played and discussed, as well as opening the "Classic Album of the Week". WXPN streams at http://www.xpn.org so I'll let you know when this will take place, prrobably right around the end of January or early February. And keep those requests coming. If i can get my 'puter running right, maybe i'll do a form for submission and forward it to Susan. Wow, an entire CD full of requests would fulfill her lifetime responsiblity to ever do one again!
