In most, it would not have been appropriate, I feel, for requests to be made. However, on the rooftop of a riverboat on Wisconsin's Chain of Lakes, Susan did ask if there was anything anyone wanted to hear and someone requested she perform "Vincent." Susan asked if anyone happened to have the TBT CD with them so she could refresh her memory with the lyrics. No one did, however Susan, in her own magnificently magnanimous fashion, performed the song with all the heartfelt emotion we're used to hearing from her... and when she dropped a lyric or two, she was assisted by one or two of us who sang along quietly. It was near nirvana, in my honest opinion. _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Dec 2001 12:43:22 -0500 From: "n'woj" Subject: Re: Mountain Stage so, did anyone get a good, stereo recording of susan's mountain stage appearance? i know jeff got a clean mono recording (wumb's stereo signal doesn't reach him very well), but i'd prefer a stereo recording if possible. extra credit question: did anyone get a digital recording of it? if not, i'm planning on digitizing this since i imagine there would be some interest in mp3s, compact discs copies, etc. but if someone has already done the work of digitizing it, it saves me the trouble! :) woj p.s. steve in montreal, i haven't forgotten you...i'll get in touch shortly... Once, seeing Susan at the Ark in Ann Arbor, MI on a bitter cold February night, a bunch of friends and I took our moms with us. My mom especially was thrilled to finally see what all the fuss was about this mystical 'Ark' place I was always visiting, since she was usually the one babysitting my kids while I did so. At encore time, folks were calling out requests. My friend Kathy (who did not bring her mom) yelled out, from the front row, 'My Mother's Garden'. Susan just politely nodded, and then Kathy yelled out 'But they all brought their MOMS!'. Susan paused, did a classic double take, and held her hand up over her eyes to shield them from the spotlights and looked and said 'Really?', and we all nodded and smiled....and she turned and said to the audience something like 'okay...let's pretend it's a hot summer night here at the Ark'....and damned if she didn't do the song. It's the one and only time I've heard that song live. And it was truly a memorable experience for all of us. And I really do have peonies from great-grandmother's farm in my yard. Merry Christmas! Since they write 80% of all the list postings, they feel they own the place. Sorry, losers. You don't. Today both these members have attacked me publically in this forum including Ron who has the insulting insensitivity to attack the ethnicity of my name and this creature above describing me as "unreasonable" when daily she sends me hateful emails privately she knows I cannot reveal to other members of this list. I remember a recent incident where she was accused of hypocracy on this very subject and now I understand why. Unless you bow down and nod like a robot to the Ron & Simona orthodoxy that whatever Susan touches, writes, says, performs, or does is gospel and God-like perfection you are insulted, demeaned, and the subject and recipient of hate-filled emails. But I have noticed that she is definately a perfectionist. She has a certain 'image' of what each show will be and puts the songs and banter together way beforehand. My take is that if you asked far ahead enough she would grant it, since she could weave the request in. But she obviuosly has her preferences about pretty much her whole performance. I have seen her at two festivals and each and every time she was at a workshop she sat stage right, far right. She also tends to 'close" a festival by being the last or second to last perfomer. And the few times I have heard her on radio with other performers she has closed the show or closed that particular segment of the show. My thought is that susan, like every other musician I know, has her preferences on how to conduct a performance (whether it makes sense or not to the viewing public). And she is very concious of achieving a certain sound and mood. Dar, who is not a professionally trained musician, is not phased by forgetting lyrics or changing her set list on the fly. But a trained musician such as susan might be very less apt to do it unless its in a more casual setting where its less a performance and more of a "interactive" musical get together. (i'm not criticizing dar, I sort of like it when she forgets the words b/c then the fans try to help out en masse... lucy kaplansky does it too on occasion) This is not a critiscm or anything. Just my personal observation. For instance, jazz musicians may seem like they are improving and noodling during a performance. But i can assure you that the improv has been very very well rehearsed and planned and perfected. And with my mom being married to one I can assure you that they get ticked off when people think its SO easy to appear off the cuff and improvisational! :) All that being said... I REALLY WANT TO HEAR "big white bed" I was told I would love the song. But its an old song. Personally, after looking at the lyrics and the fact that its on the piano *i think* it would fit into the "romantic song cycle" during the relationship is going well part. But, I am too much of a wimp to say that personally to miss werner. So if anyone out there is not as against as giving advice to a musician then please suggest it for me! ~simona Simona L. I wondered if it was a contraction of Mar and Rebuke. There was no mention or even thought of ethnicity. I was having a little fun at your expense. That is all. Why did I feel compelled to have a little fun at your expense? > The problem with this list is that two of the members, > Ron and Simona, regard this forum as their private > inner sanctum and fiefdom where their opinions matter > more than anyone else and they do not like being > challenged by those that disagree. If you were paying attention, Anthony, you will notice that I defended your right to your opinions in every post, and I was not particularly concerned that you did not like New Non-Fiction. I even agreed with some of what you said. There came a point, however, where you accused members of this list of being shills. I calmly defined the word "shilling" and explained that I did not believe that was going on here. When, however, you started saying that people on this list were "misleading" people into buying the CD and when you say that you find it "quite curious and suspicious" that people on this list like the CD when "everyone else seems to be running from this disc" at that point you became offensive and insulting, Anthony. Therefore I made a little fun at your expense, which I believe you fully deserved. Your other comments are not worthy of a response. Finally, to those of you who cannot abide a little conflict on an email list I say this: No one is playing a stereo too loud in the next apartment. No one is blowing smoke in your face. These are just written words on your monitor. You can delete them. I think a little honest disagreement and conflict is OK. Frankly, I don't understand the consistent overreactions to it. It isn't a high fee, but it's annoying. McAfee VirusScan is just as good (if not better), doesn't charge you to update your definitions, and I've seen several rebates on it that make it free if you buy it at the right place. I think that's a good idea with most artists. > A long time ago my husband and I saw Susan perform at a small church in NJ (don't ask me where). The audience was small, and the concert was on the informal side (some of the early-comers, ourselves included, listened with interest to the sound check -- always fun to listen to when Susan's the artist). At some point she did ask for requests. I made one, and she played it, but not without a grimace. I wanted to hear the song because it was the first song of hers I had heard, but she had apparently moved on from "Rubber Glove Blues", a hit on the college circuit, as she said through the grimace. This was even before "Tin Angel" came out, though, so she didn't have the huge repertoire she has now. Susan has changed a lot in the years I've been a fan (a full decade now, lucky me). When we first saw her, she seemed shy and a little unsure, somewhat anxious to please. Now she knows that she knows exactly what she's doing, and that confidence comes through. I have no doubt that she has a plan for each concert. That plan can change -- I have a written set list that differed slightly from the actual concert -- but I think there's always a reason. I try to imagine what it must be like to be a songwriter *all the time* and it boggles my mind. She knows the songs down to her bones, and her guitar seems to have grown from her wrist, so she's thinking about the bigger picture, not what chord to play next. Every concert must feel like a story she's writing... Finally, about NNF: I like the CD, but I can see why some might not. It shows one facet of Susan: I think of it as the "guitar album". It's more country-influenced, more twangy, as someone put it, and, I think, closer to her roots. I anticipate the next, "piano album" to be closer to what she has become since leaving her Iowa roots, with her "original classics". If I'm right, then these two albums should be taken together to get a clearer picture of Susan (though I think there should be a third album, the "comedy album" to round it out). They should be sold as a box set... I think those of us who are more partial to Susan's "classics", or to the sheer variety of a Susan concert, probably don't like this album so much. That's just a guess. What the world needs now is a new live album. "Tin Angel" is still my favorite Susan CD, especially since I've been there for Susan concerts (where she stood on our table for the guitar bridge in "Great Out There")... Now, I'm curious: if there were to be a "comedy album", what would you expect to see on it? Here are a few that I can think of: See the Body Bodhisattva Movie of My Life (yeah, I know it's been recorded before, but this time it gets its own track) Boy from East Dubuque Geez, it's been so long since I saw a concert, I can't think of any more...
