She has a great voice ! I'll second that vote. Kellie mailed me a demo and it's quite good, something Susan fans would appreciate. And while we're on the subject of shilling, I'll admit that it's me who does the shilling on this list. Some of you who met me last year mauy have noticed the two young folks, male and female, dressed as Greek house slaves who followed me around at Falcon Ridge fanning me with palm fronds. The volunteer shirt I wore was just for show. Or perhaps you noticed my 3000 square foot middle eastern tent down on the flat, adorned with priceless Persian rugs and guarded by two huge eunics with +3 hp scimitars (that's for you, meredith :-) Don't know how I'll invest my 7 figure salary for shilling this new album. Already have the Mercedes S-class. Already have the mansion in the Hampshires, the lodge in Aspen, the chalet in Tuscany. If you're not busy New Year's Eve, you're all invited to Milwaukee for a celebration of ten years of unwedded bliss between me and my life partner, Brian. Second: Charlie, a few weeks in that Tuscany villa would make a nice anniversary present, don'tcha think? ;-) Third: Kel, can I shill for you? Huh? Please? Can I? Can I?!? To get a wee bit serious, I really like Kellie Lin's (however brief) CD... just as much as I like NNF. Like others' voiced opinions, mine of Everybody's Talkin' is that it's not my fave SW recorded tune. So what? No big whoop! Susan still lights up my life better than Debby Boone ever could! (Can you say "dating oneself - and not in a masturbatory way"? I knew ya could!) Fourth: Anthony said, "People, including me, are being misled into buying this CD by postings to this list. I believed you people when you said this disc was great. I think posters to this list should understand the power of their words and realize that fans are spending money based on what they read here and many times are not happy with their purchase." Anthony, I respect your right to voice your opinion... over and over and over again. I wish I was able to speak so directly with film critics (who actually get PAID to reveal their a------s... I mean opinions) who encouraged me to see "Eyes Wide Shut," "Boogie Nights," etc... and Rosie O'Donnell, whose opinion I respect so much I waited in a VERRRRRRRRY long line today to purchase a dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts (new products for us Wisconsinites)... and I wish I liked 'em, but I don't. What's that old saying...? Oh yeah! Caveat emptor. (Let the buyer beware.) Hmmm... Anthony also said, "... everyone else seems to be running from this disc..." REALLY?!? I wish all those people standing between me and the Krispy Kreme counter had been been running... from NNF or anything! Anthony, can you please take your disc to the post office? I need to mail a package to my nieces. Thanks! (I'm kidding you. I'm a kidder.) Peace to all! Chuck Ellingson And don't forget about my party! Wisconsin's great this time of year! (sorry, no streaming here in Eugene, Oregon; they don't even trust us to pump our own gas!) do any of you have "alternate" lyrics to seasonal favorites that are "tame" enough to broadcast? for reference, i printed Walking 'Round in Women's Underwear that was posted here and consider that acceptable for the radio. (thank you Ron). and as for the latest controversy, hmm. i've been a fan of Michael Hedges for years (again, as many of you know), and i remember someone on his list that kept bringing up his sexuality and seemed like they were attempting to keep an angry conversation afloat. that may not be what anyone here is trying to do. as Charisse said, let's get perspective! we all have our unique experiences and tastes. heck, i haven't even listened to most of the music on Richard Hill's best-of-year list! but if someone doesn't like something, and doesn't feel supported in this list, why bother to continue sounding off about it? i found the live album from Dar Williams to be rather disappointing, but is there any sense in telling that to the Dar-list? sure, it's my opinion, and it's valid, if for no other reason. i can't abide Shawn Colvin's latest release, and as i love her dearly i keep on trying to get it, but i just can't make it click. maybe someday i'll be in the right space and they'll both be there for me when i need them. so, i can relate to Anthony, but i don't belabor the point either. (i agree with Meredith, has someone changed their email address to get back on the list!!:~) actually, i find the songwriting on New Non Fiction to be a wonderful step forward. yet the sound of the recording seems "hasty" to me, as though there wasn't a lot of preproduction work, like it was done quickly, although definitely with enthusiasm. but i find it to be an enjoyable sound. so where would i rank the album in my year's-best list? re-read the subject header for this e-mail! john v the guy who likes Everybody's Talkin' HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Dec 2001 23:04:05 EST From: PBCoustic@aol.com Subject: Re: Charlie's digs In a message dated 12/17/01 4:37:42 PM Central Standard Time, charlies_vg@yahoo.com writes: > Or perhaps you noticed my 3000 square foot middle > eastern tent down on the flat, adorned with priceless > Persian rugs and guarded by two huge eunics with +3 hp > scimitars Wioohooo, Charlie!!! The song lyrics are about memories ... In lyrics *and arrangement and delivery* it conveys the impression of something from old fashioned radio, the thing of memories. Everybody's Talkin' sounds the same to me - different mike technique, but stylized old-timey. And the underlaying of the main stereo vocals with the gradually appearing separate left/right channels (which I still can't make out -- are they the same lyrics or a different song??) ... interesting & effective. just maybe not what I'd listen to a lot. Course, my general problem is that I'm the mopey type who likes the heavy ("depressing" if you will) songs, and shies away from frequent listenings to the lighter ones. So while I recognize that the lyrics to Misery/Happiness or Big Big Car or Boat are about as clever, witty & layered as typical Susan, I go for the Old Mistake or Barbed Wire Boys or Shot Tower or St. Marys of Regret... So my bind is - live or recorded, strong voiced (NNF) or breathy/tailing off (TBT - ick) or live, I miss the old heavy ones (yes, I like Amy Ray's lyrics better than Emily Saliers' too :-) (and when I asked Susan to sign on "Old Mistake" on TBT a couple of years ago, she did say "that's so depressing" ) but, being the obsessive listener type who generally ends up buying a person's entire oeuvre, I'm quite familiar with on the one hand seeing a musician expand in new directions - and be glad for them - while on the other hand setting aside certain CDs as "nevermind". Everyone has their tastes. Also, I sometimes feel that an artist - musician or poet - really *gets* a feeling or idea spot on in one song, then go on to write other songs or poems that address the same feeling... and while those other songs/poems may be head & shoulders above the dross out there, none of them ever quite *gets* the same hold on it as that one song. And those great (to me) songs aren't necessarily those of the stereotypical "first" record -- the one for which the painstaking selection process puts out only the best effort of several years; often they are on the 2nd or 3rd - or even later. ... Just thinking that sometimes this may give some the impression that a record isn't as *good* as a previous one. nuff ramblings here ... let's return to normal obsessing .. I believe that's exactly what it was, yes. For the record, I like Susan's version of "Everybody's Talkin'" ... but I never much cared for the original, so I don't have anything invested in it either way. I like the technique that was employed, and the fact that it wasn't intended to turn out the way it did intrigues me. I like spontaneous things like that. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "an eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind" -- mahatma gandhi ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ End of believers-digest V5 #274 ******************************* --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------- This has been a posting from the Susan Werner believers-digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe believers-digest" in the body of the message
