Hi Gregg and group, (I forgive you for the bad pun, I thought it was kinda cute myself) However, this information is basically, but NOT ENTIRELY CORRECT. (Microsoft has a nasty tendency to protect and inform about their own products only) Although this virus "targets" Outlook, it will work with "any" MAPI based mail program. (Which is what 99% of the users are working with) If the virus cannot find the typical spots to forward it's malicious payload, it will find another MAPI based program to do so. (According to the experts at Symantec Anti Virus Research Center) Excerpt / quote below ***** (In all cases, MAPI will also be used to find unread mail to which the worm will reply. The subject will be "Re:". In that case, the attachment name will be one of the following: PICS IMAGES README New_Napster_Site NEWS_DOC HAMSTER YOU_ARE_FAT! SEARCHURL SETUP CARD ME_NUDE Sorry_about_yesterday S3MSONG DOCS HUMOR FUN A timer is used to examine the currently open window once per second, and to check for a window title that contains any of the following as the first three characters: LOG PAS REM CON TER NET (These texts form the start of the words LOGon, PASsword, REMote, CONnection, TERminal, NETwork) End of excerpt / quote ******** (This is the type of information that will be sent to the perpetrator of the virus.) I myself, have received the virus recently and fortunately, my anti virus program caught it / quarantined before it could do any damage! AND I DO NOT USE OUTLOOK AT ALL. (Although, Outlook express is an integral part of Windows and cannot be removed) I happen to prefer and use Netscape email. (Netscape does not automatically open attachments, unless programmed to do so by the user. - which this subject was brought up and should be discussed later) BUT, the virus could have infected my MAPI based program just as easily. Also note... that this virus has the capability of morphing into new strains and almost "daily" it transforms itself into a new variant. Therefore it will be important to update your anti virus definitions on a more frequent basis. (Daily is suggested) (Symantec's Anti virus 2001 and 2002 versions will do this "automatically" ever time that you visit the Internet and at timed intervals when you are on the internet (for the users that have a 24/7 connection (Like DSL or Cable, etc.) (Note: the Badtrans virus that was sent to me had an unusual preface and a .dat extension, which means that it is morphing at a rapid pace) It has also increased to a "level 4" virus which is now at the highest level of infection rate. (The newest level 4 virus is the W32.GonerA@mm virus that hit last week) If you want more info on this one I will be more than happy to send it. I don't want to alarm users into not using the internet, but it is better to be knowledgeable, than have it strike when you are totally unaware! Knowledge is power! Hope this info helps. Those are, almost without exception, the propagation mode of choice for the Internet viruses of the last few years. Netscape, Mozilla, Apple, Linux, ANYTHING is safer than Microsoft Outlook. So far I am unaware of any viruses targeted on it, and i used it to run Susan's annoncement list for many years before I magrated it to the smoe.org server.
