I'm really surprised that believers are saying this. Mr. Marbuke said the songs are weak? I couldn't disagree more. This seems like the strongest batch yet. Barbed Wire, All Of The Above, Stationary, gosh there are so many great songs! As for production being "cheap", maybe it wasn't as tight as what we're used to, but it sounds great to me, much looser than Trains, which I had a really hard time getting into. It had to be looser to capture that Susie energy. I'm sorry you were so disappointed, Mr. Marbuke, especially since I can't wait till Wednesday's Makor show so I can buy more copies for my friends! I respect your right to opine negatively, but I think you should give NNF more time. Just my opinion. It's my fave SW CD so far. bern, wondering if any believers will be at the 12/5 show: look for me with Jim Boylan Only $9.95 per month! http://my.netzero.net/s/signup?r=platinum&refcd=PT97 HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Dec 2001 09:25:48 -0500 From: Dennis Sousa Subject: Re: Virus Alert update First an apology! Dennis (relation to Lori in NH) ************* Important excerpt!!!!! (Besides using the compromised computer to mail itself to other targets, the worm installs both a backdoor and keystroke logger. As a result, the worm has the potential of being particularly dangerous because it might capture passwords and username combinations, as well as credit card information during the holidays when people are using their computers to place gift orders. Since a lot of people use office computers to do their shopping, and the keystroke captures all input, this threat could also compromise sensitive business information, and the backdoor could lead to the theft of business documents. **************** And now the article... Don't let BadTrans.B worm its way into your machines Nov 29, 2001 John McCormick ) 2001 TechRepublic, Inc. Just as people were beginning to feel a bit better about the state of the world and were looking forward to the holiday season, an Internet worm called BadTrans.B has been released that may chill some of the holiday warmth. This worm spreads via e-mail and takes advantage of the decreased wariness of the many people who expect holiday greetings to flood their inboxes. BadTrans.B targets Microsoft Outlook mailboxes and can steal sensitive files and information from the users of infected machines. Although this worm is being effectively filtered by most antivirus systems, it poses a significant security threat to those machines that are infected. How it works The BadTrans.B worm variant first appeared on Nov. 23, and according to reports, it began in Great Britain. Incidents.org reports that by Nov. 26, the worm had already spread to 52 countries. You can track the progress of this and other Internet threats through Messagelabs.com. BadTrans.B was up to number two (behind SirCam) on the incident list by 12:00 P.M. EST on Nov. 27. This worm spreads by replying to messages contained in an infected systems Outlook mailbox. The timing of its release suggests that it may be attempting to capture sensitive data thats exposed during online shopping sessions. BadTrans.B propagates through e-mail attachments, which can begin with any of the following filenames: Humor Docs S3msong Me_nude Card Searchurl You_are_fat! News_doc Images As it mutates, there will probably be other names as well. The attachments use a dual extension as part of the filename. That is, an attachment carrying the worm might be named Humor.zip.scr, where humor could be replaced by any of the possible names. There are also variants for the extensions, making the number of possible file designations initially about 60. This is just an estimate; some combinations may not be used, a few others may not have been discovered yet, and new variants may be released as the original worm spreads. The first extension could be .doc, .mp3, or .zip. The second extension could be either .pif or .scr. Besides using the compromised computer to mail itself to other targets, the worm installs both a backdoor and keystroke logger. According to Network Associates, the worm spreads by using MAPI messaging to e-mail 13,312-byte attachments. The addresses for outgoing infections are replies to unread Outlook messages. There are reports that BadTrans messages can contain several text versions, including a brief message telling the recipient to look at the attachment. Network Associates reports that when the virus is run, it displays an Install Error message box that says, File data corrupt: probably due to a bad transmission or bad disk access. This worm installs a backdoor (Kernel32.exe) keyed to a new registry entry, which installs the backdoor at bootup and e-mails the IP address of infected machines. This allows someone initiating the spread of BadTrans to download the contents of the Hksdll.dll keystroke logger file, which the worm also installs. Avoiding the worm Although this worm is spreading rapidly, it isnt rated by Symantec as particularly dangerous. Symantec provides the following recommendation for administrators to quickly prevent infection: Block any e-mail with attachments ending in .pif or .scr. This is generally a good practice anyway, but there are also specific comments related to this worm on the Symantec site. To check for infection, Symantec security specialists say that you can look for a new copy of Kernel32.exe in the \Windows\system directory and the following registry value: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\RunOnce\Kernel32=kernel32.exe Other security specialists report that infected systems will also contain the Inetd.exe file, which is the actual worm. Final word BadTrans.B is a slight variant of what Network Associates calls W32/BadTrans, a worm first described in the wild on April 11, 2001. Regularly updating virus descriptions in most antivirus programs should prevent infections by this and other variants of BadTrans. This dangerous worm is an excellent example of how having a good antivirus system in place can save a lot of time and money. Those who have antivirus software and a good policy for maintaining it have largely been immune to this virus. Those who dont have such software or lack a good implementation policy are suffering some major headaches because of this little demon. *************************** Leslie Dreyer Kalra wrote: > The filename of the attachment I got was humor.mp3.scr, if that helps. You may have an opinion, you may express an opinion, I may express a different opinion, etc. As long as no one sinks to the level of "only an idiot would hold that opinion" (Ron, is this what you refered to as "ad hominem" arguments? - my Latin is a little rusty) the we should all be fine. I happen to disagree with Tony on most of his points, too - but that only makes him misinformed, not unworthy of breathing air I've said before, I like the nearly live sound of this CD, and don't think it sounds cheap at all. To the comment about songs not having the emotional power as previous CD's, Suze herself commented that this is a "happier" CD than previous ones, and she realized that would disappoint some of us. (she did, she said that!) I know at least one fan who got hooked on Susan because of the angry undertone in LOGSG, and stays hooked because of Suze's immense versatiltiy. I want to add my apologies to the rest of the groups for the nasty e-mails - SW fans are not all like that either! I don't like it, the vast majority of listmembers don't like it, and it shouldn't happen. 'nuff said. I won't even go as far as to say Tony is misinformed. He just has some valid issues with the CD. And that's totally fine by me. I wish I could say I have a favorite SW CD, but that's not true. I like them all for different reasons. I like Midwestern Saturday night 'cause it shows Susan's budding talents, and uses some local musicians. It also has some of my fav songs on it. I like LATA, cause, hey, Susan live, what's better than that? Don't really like the sound quality, but that's just me. I like LOTGSG, 'cause it shows a progression in songwriting skill, and I like one song in particular that Susan has said was overproduced. Nope, not gonna name it. I like TBT 'cause it's so damned acoustic. Again, great songwriting. And I gotta say Darrell Scott just kicks @ss on string instruments. I like NNF 'cause it sounds just like Susan rounded up the boys and played a live gig. The arrangements are so close to her live arrangements, and that in itself recommends it to me. Last night on the Gene Shay folk show on WXPN here in Philly, I heard 2 cuts from the new CD. Now, Gene knows more about folk music (and jazz, for that matter) than I'll ever know, and the cuts i heard (there may have been more- duty was calling) were "Everbody's Talking" and "Misery and Happiness" which I found to be passing strange, since there were issues about both of them on the list. And no, Gene doesn't even own a bleep button, so Misery went out unedited. So it just shows to go you that there's different strokes for different folks, folks Charlie Sweeney (=}===# http://somethingblack.com P.S. If you're local to Philly, there's a benefit for the NY Firefighters and Policemaen's Fund in Delaware County on Saturday, with 30 acts, including Lisa Beth Weber, John Flynn, and Nancy Falkow. For info please go to: http://www.fortissimo.org It runs from 6 to 11 PM, and costs just $10, with all the proceeds (plus matching funds from the Philadelphia Folksong Society) going to the folks in NY who suffered the loss of loved ones on September 11th. I was wondering if anyone else was planning on going to the Syracuse or Rochester NY shows this coming weekend. I was going to be home in upstate new york either way this weekend and am so happy that susan decided to coordinate her concert schedule with my mom's channukah party on sunday :) (okay, so its just a coincedence) If anyone from the list will be there and wants to get together before hand or something then I would be very much up for it. I also will put out the offer of a ride if someone does not have one. I am coming from Pittsburgh and willing to go out of my way to a certain point to pick someone up. Also, thanks to all the cool CDs people talked about I ended up spending some money these past few weeks. I listen to music at work all day I am totally grateful for everyone sharing what's on their stereos. So far the Sarah Harmer CD is my favorite new purchase. Ron's post about Holly Cole made me pull out "don't smoke in bed" and "blame it on my youth" out from the stack of jazz CDs that I have not touched in a while. thanks ron, which of Holly's cd's do you own? And May I suggest.... A new artist that was just introduced to me named Amy Correia has released a fantastic album called Carnival Love. I suggest this album to anyone out there. She's nothing like susan... sort of an rawer and hard edged alternative version of dar williams and sarah mclachlan. Intersting Lyrics and a nice sound. Her website www.amycorreia.com has videos and full length clips of some of the songs so you can try before you buy. See a few of you in upstate new york *i hope* ~simona Simona L. We all love Susan, but we have varied tastes in other performers. The first Susan Werner CD I heard was LOTGSG. I had seen ads for the CD in Performing Songwriter and other periodicals, and I flat out took a chance. Went nuts when I heard it, and immediately began bugging my friends at the Handlebar in Greenville, SC, to book her. It took over a year. The earlier CDs don't do as much for me as LoTGSG - but probably because by the time I heard them, Susan's songwriting had already matured to such an incredible level. TBT left me cold at first, because I liked the big production of LoTGSG. Susan has a big production cabaret/jazz/Broadway voice. No one else in the genre sounds like her. TBT tried to make her more singer-songwriter folkie. Love the CD now. This new one is growing on me, too. Loved Barbed Wire Boys (learning it on the banjo, Paul!), and Big Car firt time through. Nefertiti has crept up on me. Bottom line - for those of us who only get to see Suze once every 2 years, a new Susan Werner CD is better than none!!!
