[Ronaathome@aol.com] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 1 Dec 2001 09:50:58 -0500 From: "mosh" Subject: cd pricing various points have been made regarding the outrageous prices of new cds at retail. having worked in that field for ten years, here are a couple of thoughts you may take for what they're worth: 1) the average price that a store pays for a new cd is ~$11 - 12. from what i understand, a 50% markup over cost is not unheard of in any form of retail. 2) stores like best buy, circuit city, fred meyer, etc. use cds as what is called a "loss leader." they sell that or just below cost, but don't make any money from them. they use them to get people into the stores to buy computers, appliances, stereos, etc. i realize the customer doesn't necessarily care WHY the cds are cheaper there, but there is a reason. 3) just because it is shrinkwrapped, doesn't necessarily mean it's new. many stores have the ability to re-wrap cds on site. 4) occasionally, a new artist (like john mayer, five for fighting, and, when they were new, fiona apple and duncan sheik) will come out at a "bargain price." once the artist has become somewhat successful at radio and mtv/vh1, the record company will raise the price to the normal retail level. 5) and charisse wrote: "Maybe it's time to have a congressional investigation of the major record companies for price fixing!" That was somewhat looked into regarding a policy called MAP (minimum advertised pricing). This was when all the labels got together and told all retail stores that no cds could be sold below a certain price (usually ~$11). The government did decide that this was illegal. However, just because the policy was abandoned, stores did not have to lower their prices. and as long as people are regularly willing to pay $15 - 20 for a new cd (and believe me, people are very willing) i doubt things will change. rock on! stephen/MOSH "I came from Israel as a child, a stranger in a strange land. One album was called Rabbi Saul featuring the boys on the Rubber Soul cover wearing wide-brimmed hats and beards. I was humbled and blessed by an email I received yesterday from a friend of my younger sister's. I have not seen this woman since she was 12 and I was 17. She stumbled on my website while surfing, and wrote me that she was happy to know that I was doing well, and still doing music. She wrote that she had love my music, and had treasured a drawing I had done for her. She said she kept it for years and years, and that the little poem I'd written her had brightened her on many a sad day. I don't remember doing it, it was a small thing to me apparently. But to a gawky 12 year old girl it had been important. Everything we do counts. So do it with kindness and compassion. Her note made my sad day a little brighter.
