Starting with Don't Bother Me from Meet the Beatles. Songs like If I Needed Someone, I Need You, I Want to Tell You, It's All Too Much, Only a Northern Song, Taxman, You Like Me Too Much, Think for Yourself, Here Comes the Sun, Something, While My Guitar Gently Weeps. It is a sad day. Someone on another list posted this poem, which I thought was nice. G eorge, you're gone from us too young E ven now, the news is hard to bear; O ver the years so many of your songs we've sung R ejoicing in your gift of music rare. There is so much profit margin in these prices that the industry is able to easily throw us an occasional promotional tidbit, like the new John Mayer "Room for Squares" disc. I found it at a local Fred Meyer, with a bonus 2 track live disc attached, for $8.99. Yes, the price of new CD's is outrageous. That's the way it works in most industries. Maybe it's time to have a congressional investigation of the major record companies for price fixing! Those people, I expect are pleased w/ NNF. Those that liked the arrangements in TBT prob won't like the versions in NNF. As they say, can't please everyone all the time (and some folks you can't please any of the time! ) For myself, I think the arrangements on NNF are "acoustic" and "live" sounding, without being thin or "cheap" sounding - something you might validly say about MSN. (none of my opinion applies to "everybody's talking", btw, I still haven;'t figured out what I think of that one) I agree with whoever said this is the best bet for a commercial hit - leaving out the piano stuff makes it easier to classify, and many of the songs have that "get stuck in your head" quality that makes for a radio hit. I think it is the best so far, w/ few or any weak spots. And Anthony, just give us your e-mail and ask for bids - save the ebay fees! I was thrilled to hear that they would be at the Philly Folk Fest, and when the fest came i eagerly lined up at the CD booth to buy my copy of their first CD. When I got to the front of the line, the checker apologized, and said the CD would be $22-ouch. Then she asked if I still wanted it and said if so I could have one of the 2 remaining copies (out of 300). Oh yeah, I bought it. I could be wrong, but my understanding is that this was essentially a self financed CD. Economy of scale forces the price to be where it is. It costs a lot more per copy to produce 1000 than it does to produce 100,000. In this case the ratio is more that 3 to 1, and that's ignoring the cost of the studio, back-up musicians, and don't forget transportation to and from the studio, living expenses while recording. Remember, recording a CD is not a trip to the studio for a couple hours and off to touring again,. It took lots of trips from the road to the studio to get the CD done, then further trips for the mixing. As for the distribution/record company deal, no, it's not dead at all. I have a little backchannel info that Susan's manager is talking to a couple very respectable companies, that handle major folky type acts. That doesn't mean it's gonna happen and i'm certainly not gonna hand out any names and then be proven a chump. But it looks like they're heading in the right direction. The placement with Bulletproof can only enhance that position, and hell, it puts Susan in very good company. That's all I gots for now. Charlie (=}===# http:somethingblack.com Yahoo! I bought Dar Williams latest live release (a folk CD, yes?) for $11.99 at Circuit City. Diana Krall's latest (another personal favorite) for $10.99 at Target. The last strictly folk CD I bought before Dar's was The Nields Gotta Get Over Greta for $12.99 at a local CD store. All were new copies still in shrinkwrap. I buy things retail when they are on sale! Why isn't Susan's new CD on sale like all other new CDs in every store? I'm sure Susan's strongest fans are willing to pay $20 for one of her CDs. I paid nearly that. However, I have never known new releases by folk artists like Susan to be "on sale" or available at a discount. There's no price gouging here. I'm willing to pay $16 for the work of folk artists at their shows or online. I would almost never pay $16 for a CD by a big name artist. I would find it on sale or used, but the economics of the "folk scene" are different. I've gotten many folk CDs used, but not new releases. What other folk type artists do you follow?
