As a long time fan and all the positive comments I read here on the list about the disc, I couldn't wait to have a copy of my own. What a surprise after I played it. No wonder why they are selling them only at shows and not online or anywhere else. This is by far Susan's weakest effort, a major disappointment for me especially after the growing foundation of Straight Girls and Time Between Trains. The songs are not the strongest I have seen her perform over the last three years live in concert and I wonder who choose them for the CD. The production values really struck me as cheap when compared to the rich layering of the two previous discs. I think list posters who described it as "live" or "twangy" are correct. This effort reminded me very much of the raw qualities of Midwestern Saturday Night, her cheaply produced novice recording. Of course it is good to hear Susan perform but this is a major step backwards for her. I was eagerly anticipating a new masterpiece from her after her last two awesome and wonderful CDs and this effort rings very flat and hollow especially when she had three years to put a new disc together. Look for my copy on eBay very soon. After so much hoopla and waiting, I can't bear to listen to this disc again. Yahoo! I find this CD to have the most commercial potential. Some of the songs on it can (and I hope WILL) get some good airtime, if promoted correctly. I think "Stationary" is short and snappy enough to hit it big on some more mainstream rock/pop stations, and "Yellow House" and "Barbed Wire Boys" are strong candidates for country circuit. "Misery and Happiness" (which is one of my favorite all time Susan songs) would also do great if some stations didn't feel the necessity to bleep out "Asshole". 'Course, me, I'd rather hear "Soul's not at War" or "My Mother's Garden" or "Sorry About Jesus" on the radio but I think we're talking a bigger picture here. Maybe it was constructed to hit a wider audience and I think this will be the case. I'm not saying, as a die-hard Susan fan, that this is the best album she ever made, but the variety of styles on this one is sure to get her more noticed by the music industry. I think everyone can find something they love here. She deserves to some more attention for the brilliant singer/songwriter/performer she is. Once they buy this album, and love it, they'll go back and buy some more! After eight years and countless shows and repeated requests, it was such a joy to hear. Like Chuck's friend, I cried throughout the entire song. Amazing. Simply amazing. A perfect finish to a perfect show. I can't think of a single thing to add to Chuck's wonderful review. Well, okay, maybe one thing - having never heard 'Philanthropy' I had a whole 'nother sound in my mind for that song; I wasn't prepared for its almost bouncy cheery tone - but I LOVED IT. And I talked with Susan a bit about the discussion we'd had here on the list about which holiday song we'd like to hear her sing - and she said unequivocally that Eartha Kitt's 'Santa Baby' is one of her favorites, and that she had just been listening to it in the past week, and seemed to get a big kick out of the fact we'd been talking about it at the same time. Clearly the last 3 CDs are far different from Susan in concert, and originally I was somewhat disappointed in the latest release for that reason. Once I realized that they are two separate things, Susan in concert and Susan on CD, I grew to like the CD. All I would suggest, Anthony, is that you give it some time and some more listening before you put it on ebay, because you might start to like it. What Suzie T left out is the part where she brought Sammy Kahn's Susan Werner lyrics to Santa Baby (published here on 11/18) and showed them to Susan who got a kick out of them.
