I suggest that Susan could have done this with a new melody. Using a known melody is generally used as a technique for getting yourself out of a writing slump - which hardly seems to be Susan's problem! She is a prolific writer. I am noticing less tolerance for being objective on this list, based on several off list emails I have received. Disappointing at best, depressing at least." as far as i know, anyone who has an opinion isn't objective, and every single person on the list has opinions! i think it's kind of silly to imply that any individual is being objective while others are not. if what you mean is that you notice a low tolerance for criticism of susan, you may be right, but i don't think it's too surprising, given the virtual company you're in! i myself feel completely tolerant of criticism, discussion, opionion, and questioning of all kinds. i think it's healthy. as for the yellow house, i have to show some restraint here because, apparently, my perception of susan's intention as a writer is completely different from yours. i find it surprising that anyone can have listened to her very much and not be fully aware that any move she makes as a writer is completely intentional and completely conscious. to me, it's clear that the nod to the traditional melody is COMPLETELY intentional... to draw you into the feel of the genre and then dazzle you with the ways she's transcended it. that's my opinion! cheers Make a great connection at Yahoo! As one who grew up on the original Fred Neil, I loved that Susan covered the song in concert. At first, I didn't like the album version, but the more I hear it, the more it grows on me. Now I find it very haunting and interesting. So, may I suggest to you, Susan Krauss, keep listening to it, and keep an open mind and you might start to like it as well. As Christopher Sweeney says, I think Susan knows exactly what she's doing when she makes choices that at first we scratch our heads at. Yellow > House seems like a throw away song compared to others - the melody is a cop > from a traditional tune (and I'm not even sure that this wasn't a > copyrighted tune that I don't see credited anywhere). my thoughts - i don't know what susan's original intentions were for this song, but i do think it serves a purpose on 'new non-fiction'. when susan had talked about making album #5 in the past, she'd say that this one would be the folkie-rock album, and the next would be the 'new' jazz standards. with the goal of a more typical sounding trad folk album as a target, 'yellow house' makes a lot of sense to me. re: copyrights - i'm all about protecting copyrighted material, but it seems a common practice in certain veins of traditional folk and bluegrass music, and sometimes in genres such as blues or early rock/roll, to set new lyrics to previously established melodies and chord progressions without infringing on copyright, due to the generic quality of the music. so many tunes are derived from melodies that are changed only by a note here or there. they become a part of what defines the style - and not *necessarily* a melody that can attributed to any one artist or writer. bluegrass music is filled with melodies that sound much like 'yellow house', but again, it would be difficult to pin down a single writer who came up with these melodies and variations. i'm thinking about all of the celtic music, and blues tunes that i've heard that sound so strikingly similar. part of this is related to the fact that much of music in these genres was meant to tell a story or convey history - so if the melody was simple enough to be memorable, or better yet, already familiar to an audience, the text had a better chance to survive. this concept relates well to 'pop' music too, though the goal of memorability is not thought of as a means to preserve a story but as a means to sell records: they remember it, they sing it, they buy it. 'yellow house' has a certain pop sensibility about it that my non-musician friends, in particular, are drawn to. for many of them, it is their favorite susie song. i like it because it is deceptively simple. the music isn't doing the heavy work here - the lyric is.... and knowing that susan does *not* have to write within the confines of this style, as charisse said, i enjoy the tune even more. but all of this aside, i'm learning more and more, that, for my *own* purposes, quality is not determined by what is simple and what is complicated. i go to a music school where jazz is king. the more non-diatonic notes, the more chromatic chord changes - the better...or so i thought for a long time. while i still value everything i'm learning from jazz, and *love* to sing seconds and all sorts of delicious tensions, i'm able to appreciate other genres without comparing them to these things. the less is more approach, i guess... so, anyway, now i've said way too much and it's way too late and i gotta get up early to sing in the subway tomorrow, so i'll stop. before i do though, i just want to reiterate that these words reflect my opinion only, and are *not* in any way an attempt to discredit or alter the opinions of anyone else on the list. with that disclaimer out of the way, i'm going to bed. sweet dreams, all!
