Lowe" Subject: Re: Book for Susan Good morning Simona & All, I don't recall people making negative comments about the CD - just the fact that it's not easy to obtain. So, let's discuss the CD. Living in Kansas I've had little opportunity to see Susan, so EVERY song on the disc was new to me except "Everybody's Talking". And it kills me to admit that I am old enough to have a Fred Neil vinyl of the song.... I remember when TBT was released many of us were upset with the production. It was a quieter, more singer-songwriter delivery, not the big cabaret vocals we were used to from previous CDs. I think we all pretty much decided this was Susan trying to find her niche. I have grown to love the CD and consider several of the songs classics. This CD is again quiet, and feels like Susan is in the room next to you. Not so many exotic instruments - you feel like she's playing with her own band. My favorites of the new songs (so far), are Barbed Wire Boys (which I am already learning on the banjo), May I Suggest, All of the Above, Big Car, and Nefertiti's Dream, and Misery & Happiness. Susan has an absolutely razor-edged wit, and her fun songs are about the best around. When I heard All of the Above for the first time, I laughed out loud. And Big Car has some great lines - "I feel like Patton rolling over France". I've been reading lyrics to other unreleased songs that I've never heard, and there are so many I wish I had heard. For instance, 'Beautiful Chains of Love'. I wish she had recorded that instead of " Yellow House". Yellow House seems like a throw away song compared to others - the melody is a cop from a traditional tune (and I'm not even sure that this wasn't a copyrighted tune that I don't see credited anywhere). But it must be important to Susan right now, or she wouldn't have bothered putting it on the CD. Just some pre-coffee ramblings on a Sunday morning. Please don't anyone take offense at anything I've written. I love her work, and would love to sit and have a cup of coffee (in a big crockery mug, not styrofoam) with her and just talk about songwriting and the state of the world. Enjoy your first day of DST. Charisse ' man, am I mellow today or what?' Susan has even hinted that there may be actual big-band arrangements for some. The problem as I see it is that Susan keeps writing great song after great song so by the time the "next album" comes out, all your favorites of this genre will be squeezed out in favor of new favorites. I suggest that Susan could have done this with a new melody. Using a known melody is generally used as a technique for getting yourself out of a writing slump - which hardly seems to be Susan's problem! She is a prolific writer. I am noticing less tolerance for being objective on this list, based on several off list emails I have received. Disappointing at best, depressing at least. It does sound more like a live performance, only with a band. My absolute favorite song on the album, and quickly rising up my list of absolute favorite songs ever, is "Nefertiti's Dream". I have to put it on repeat every time. The imagery is incredible, and it's got such a groove. Lots of the new songs have a great groove, which I love ("Shade of Grey", "All Of The Above", "Big Car"). The only song on the CD that I could live without is "It's OK To Feel Good" -- I'd rather have heard "Frank Lloyd Wright", or "Year Of The Bad President" instead. But it's a very minor quibble. I'm actually glad she decided to drop the Mary Gauthier cover -- "Karla Fay" is too depressing a song to hear more than once in a while. It's out on True North records - I guess Lynn's not with Rounder anymore (huh). I don't know whether this means that the album is only available in Canada right now. If so I know you can order it from A&B Sound at www.absound.ca... Anyway, "Unravel" is great. Seems to me that it's in a more country vein than "Night in a Strange Town", which I felt was quite overproduced. The album sounds relaxed (in a good way) and happy. Susan's singing sounds great, and the band really kicks. I love that upright bass groove! In short, the album's got all the right sounds in all the right places. If Susan does any band shows and I have to miss them I'm going to be very, very sad. >My absolute favorite song on the album, and quickly rising up my list of >absolute favorite songs ever, is "Nefertiti's Dream". I'm glad she dug it up again though - it turned out great. I love that Wurlitzer solo. >Oh yeah, did I mention I love the album, and i'll be very high on my list >of top CDs of the year? :) #1 with a bullet for me! Other random thoughts on the new album... Thematically, "Barbed Wire Boys" reminds me of "Like Bonsai". Maybe Susan's got another song cycle going - the "Midwestern Repression" cycle or something like that... Also, I was surprised how many less serious songs are on the album. "Big Car", "Misery & Happiness", "All of the Above"... "Shade of Grey" could also be conceivably be included on this list. That's a quarter (or a third, depending on how you count it) of the album right there. This is a theoretical quibble only though - while I wish there were more serious songs (Susan's got so many damn fine ones to choose from) I also really like the groove of the more lighthearted songs. So, no real complaints from me. :) sherlyn - -- Sherlyn Koo - sherlyn@fl.net.au "It really is that simple, It really is that fragile" - Peter Mulvey HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ End of believers-digest V5 #216 ******************************* --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------- This has been a posting from the Susan Werner believers-digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe believers-digest" in the body of the message
