I feel like I'm repeating myself but they really all have been fantastic shows. I feel so incredibly lucky and grateful to have been able to catch so many shows on this tour. This really is, as Susan so aptly puts it, the best part of my life. I didn't write down a setlist this time, having foolishly left my notebook and pen locked in the car. Doh. Susan played first - there weren't any real surprises on her setlist, at least not for me. She cut down on the guitar songs in favour of the romantic song cycle though, since she seemed to have so much fun playing the Yamaha grand. Ellis called Susan up about a third of the way into his set for "3000 Miles" and "Conversation With a Ghost", and she stayed on stage for the remainder of the show, mostly at the piano. It was incredible to see how, especially on songs they'd never played together before (of which there were at least five) Susan was able to jump right in and add some really intelligent and appropriate accompaniment. I've always been completely in awe of people who are able to do that, having no talent in that area myself. It was really a treat to see. Both Ellis and Susan were hilariously funny that night. The last west-coast show - they may have both been a little punchy. Random moments... - - Ellis was about ten seconds into the intro for "Conversation With a Ghost" (a very quiet, sad song, for those of you who haven't heard it) when he stopped completely and leaned over and grabbed something from someone in the front row. He held it up - it was a local paper with a picture of Susan on the front. After handing the paper to Susan so she could model it for us he muttered something about how he was sure *his* picture was on the back, and handed the paper back to whomever he'd grabbed it from. And straight back into the song he went... - - Ellis commenting that Susan had a "perfect side-player face". Susan then pulled a succession of faces while Ellis identified them for us. I think he got the first two but the third was greeted with, "I have no idea what that face is!" Susan then proceeded to keep us all amused by pulling faces throughout the next song. Hee. There were a lot of other funny moments (seems like I was either cracking up or holding my breath in wonder through the entire show) but I can't remember any of them right now, dammit. One highlight of Ellis's set that I do recall was to hear him (Him? He? My grammar lobe has shut down) and Susan rocking out on a blues song that Ellis said he wrote with his friend Sharon. It looked like they were both having a great time. Again, no "Nefertiti's Dream". Sigh. I did get there kind of early though and got to hear Susan playing some of it during soundcheck, so that was nice. Another amusing moment during soundcheck was hearing Ellis composing a new song, apparently to be called "Where Are My Keys". The lyrics go something like, "Did I lock them in the car? They don't seem to be in my jacket". Obviously, the finished version of the song may differ slightly from this early draft... I am now officially exhausted so I'm off to get some sleep. My brain is kind of fried right now too so if anybody has anything to add to this please be my guest... BTW, if any of you are going to be in Berkeley on Nov. 4 to see SONiA of disappear fear at Rose Street House of Music I'll probably be selling merchandise at the show, so come up and say hi! Cheers, sherlyn ps - I remembered one more thing from the second show at the Freight and Salvage on Saturday night. Right before "Conversation With a Ghost" Ellis looked over and said, "I love playing with you, Susan." Susan replied, "I love playing with you too." Everyone awww-ed until Susan said, "We didn't do that for you!" Hee. You make a very good point, Pattye, which others have alluded to. But it still doesn't excuse her manager jerking venues around and alienating the owners, nor does it excuse not making the CD available to fans via mail order. And I'm sure Susan doesn't like the fact that she doesn't have a record deal -- because she's clearly trying to get one. Personally, I'm not sure that Susan could ever be "bigger" in terms of playing bigger venues, just because of the type of material she does. Dar is the exception rather than the rule. Most folkies play the same circuit as Susan. Personally, I would just like to see some big names record some of her songs because I think they are so good and because it would give Susan some decent royalties. Actually this would be the absolute wrong way to get the music to the show. Not only would it be an unauthorized duplication, but it would completely eliminate any credibility and ensure the song *didn't* get played. But if it arrived as the complete album, packaging and all so they could see this is a legitimate artist, I think there would be a different story altogether. I know of at least one believer (besides myself) who is planning to get a copy to Car Talk Plaza as soon as possible, so I think we've got this covered. All that remains is to start sending in the suggestions via the cars.com website. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "an eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind" -- mahatma gandhi ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com Simona L. Glad to hear I was right. Susan loved the Yamaha grand piano at the Kuumbwa (was it a baby grand? I thought it was mid or even full size, but then I didn't look all that closely). She spent a couple of minutes praising the resonant tone of the lower octaves, playing chords with a big goofy grin on her face. She said it wanted to make her play Beethoven... and then she did, launching into one of the sonatas (might have been the Waldstein, I'm not sure). Is there anything that woman can't do? Sheesh. I think I heard the sound engineer say that the piano was worth $45,000. Yipes. You can get Steinways (which I've always seen as the royalty of pianos) for less than that. Susan also said something about how she likes Yamahas because they're more suited to "noodlers" like herself. I don't know if she was kidding about that - self-perceived noodler or not, her piano playing is nothing to sneeze at. I was watching pretty closely on Sunday and she has some pretty impressive technique (that's the repressed classical pianist in me speaking there)... >Heh.
