Here are Susan's setlists plus my vague reviews from the Berkeley shows at the Freight & Salvage... 5PM SHOW - ---------------- 1. Stationary 2. Shade of Grey 3. Little Yellow House 4. Barbed Wire Boys 5. Misery & Happiness 6. Maybe if I Sang Cole Porter (over at the piano) 7. No One Needs to Know 8. Three Blind Meis 9. Light Sleeper 10. Much at All 11. Stay on Your Side of Town (still at the piano) 12. Standing in My Own Way (back to the guitar) - -- 13. May I Suggest 14. Knockin' on Heaven's Door (w/ Ellis) The venue was only about half full, which was a little disappointing. 5pm on a Saturday is obviously not prime time as far as folk concerts go. Ellis played first - I missed part of his set because I was about half an hour late. What I caught of his set was great though, of course. Susan started at 6pm and was obviously tired - in fact one of her first comments when she got onstage was, "Wake up little Suzie, time to do the show!" Hee. Tired or not, she was as great and funny as always. The explanation of the architecture tour which preceded "Three Blind Meis" included the classic Werner comment, "I think a lot of weird things," which made me laugh. Oh, yes. :) Due to the time constraints both Ellis and Susan's sets were pretty short and the encore was only two songs. The whole thing was done by about 7.15pm. After grabbing a drink I went outside for about 15 minutes and came back in again for the... 8PM SHOW - ---------------- 1. Stationary 2. Shade of Grey 3. Little Yellow House 4. Courting the Muse 5. St Mary's of Regret (w/ Ellis on guitar) 6. Misery & Happiness 7. Like Bonsai 8. 3 Blind Meis 9. Big Car 10. Tall Drink of Water (over at the piano) 11. Maybe if I Sang Cole Porter 12. Philanthropy (on the guitar, but seated at the piano) 13. Much at All 14. So Nice Seeing You Again 15. I Can't Be New - -- 16. May I Suggest 17. Let It Be (w/ Ellis) - -- 18. Heart of Gold (w/ Ellis) No time constraints this time - the show was much longer than the 5pm show had been. The venue was full, full, full. Ellis played first again - another killer set. Susan seemed a lot perkier too. I had a friend with me who'd never heard either Susan or Ellis before and it was fun watching her mouth fall open (and stay that way) at the start of each of their sets. Another convert. :) I was hoping for Susan's setlist to include a little more variation - in particular, I've been wanting to hear "Nefertiti's Dream". I guess since (unlike in Eugene) the second show was packed while the first show wasn't, Susan just didn't have that flexibility this time around. Ah well. It's interesting that "Philanthropy" is now a guitar song - it worked fine either way for me. To me it sounds a lot jazzier on the guitar than it did on the piano. But then, what do I know... That's it I think. Can't recall too much else about the second show except that I had a damn fine time. Anybody else want to add anything? Review of the Santa Cruz show to follow... - -sherlyn HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Oct 2001 00:20:56 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Eyes Wide Shut and a plea for patience Hi, Simona proposed: >The Idea about CarTalk was excellent! and If anyone out there can make a >very high quality MP3 (ie 160Kps or higher) of Big Car off of NNF you can >send it to me somehow and I will burn it onto a CD and send it to Car Talk >myself (I have been wanting to call them and ask a car question anyway... >so this would be a good oppurtunity). Actually this would be the absolute wrong way to get the music to the show. Not only would it be an unauthorized duplication, but it would completely eliminate any credibility and ensure the song *didn't* get played. But if it arrived as the complete album, packaging and all so they could see this is a legitimate artist, I think there would be a different story altogether. I know of at least one believer (besides myself) who is planning to get a copy to Car Talk Plaza as soon as possible, so I think we've got this covered. All that remains is to start sending in the suggestions via the cars.com website. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "an eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind" -- mahatma gandhi ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Oct 2001 22:17:05 -0700 From: "john vavrek" Subject: new nonfiction you know, i've been absorbing this new album slowly. but never once have i thought it wasn't an excellent conclusion to a long process (for the artist obviously, but for the listener as well). sure, we here share our common experience of seeing Susan live, and wow!! say no more. (okay, if you won't bite, i will. "no more.") with other artists frequently compared with ms werner, the audience seems so very judgmental of the latest recording effort, at least until they become "accustomed" to it. then they suddenly are discussing the best songs, or what reminds them of what..., i remember being flamed by the Dar-list for asking people to cool their criticism and give the artist a chance; to give themselves a chance to listen to the recording before shouting it down. boy, did i get told off! and i guess rightfully, because we all obviously have our opinions. BUT, the support i hear at this site for Susan Werner's music, persona, career et al! is nothing but that: support! even the diatribe about management and label issues are only in supporting the talent for which we come in common admiration. (sorry about the grammar! some habits are hard to break.) anyway, i'm making the last batch of salsa for this year and wishing i could go back in time ten days and listen to these songs in concert again. hoping to meet more of you through the years, sigh! jv HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ End of believers-digest V5 #211 ******************************* --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------- This has been a posting from the Susan Werner believers-digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe believers-digest" in the body of the message
