Not the most obvious title (I would have picked "Give In, Give Up" myself), but Ellis and Susan did a radio interview in Santa Cruz on Sunday and the DJ asked about it, so that's straight from the horse's mouth, as it were. It's an absolutely incredible song. In fact, I can't say enough good things about Ellis' new songs. They absolutely knocked me over, more so each time I heard them. I've had "Get Ready For It" stuck in my head for the past 48 hours straight. I can't WAIT to get my hands on his new album, which should be out in a few weeks... Let's not > go > Talk about arranging deck chairs on the Titanic! The only issue of importance for me as an old, die-hard Susan Werner fan is that her career appears to be at best stagnant and at worst imploding and while many list members have arrows to shoot at the messenger they have few aimed directly at the cause of the problem. Look at today's Believer posting if you really need evidence of what I say. Susan doing SEVEN shows in FIVE days. A gracious offer by Jeff to buy CDs and ship them (a thankless job) instead of who really should be doing this work. And a fantastic idea by Lori to get NPR to play Susan's new song, BIG CAR. Unfortunately, 99% of Susan's most loyal fans have yet to hear the studio version of the song because we can't buy the CD! I love the discussions about Susan's pants and her hair. But people, her career is in dire straits. She doesn't have a record deal, her fan base is stagnant (Ever notice she plays the same venues again and again and again?), her management team is oblivious to the Internet and even basic marketing techniques, and she is touring herself into exhaustion just to make ends meet. I'm not blaming anyone. I'm describing a problem. One that needs immediate fixing. The issue isn't whether Susan plays in large venues with high ticket prices but whether she tours at all! I've seen so many talented performers over the years grow weary of the long drives, truck stop hamburgers, motel rooms, nasty promoters, stolen sound equipment, bad weather, canceled gigs, and all the rest and simply make money with their music other ways. Teaching, writing songs, studio work, even jingles for commercials, all from home----a place traveling musicians desperately miss. What if Susan wakes up one morning and says NO MORE? I remember Susan in the early days in Philadelphia when she mesmerized me for the first time and thought this woman was destined for success. It hasn't happened. That was more than seven years ago. It takes more than crossing your fingers to build a successful music career. Being nice isn't the only answer, being efficient, proactive and visionary is. I would hope that all those responsible (including Susan) take notice of the status quo and learn some lessons from it. And thank you to all the fellow Believers who email me privately and tell me I'm right. I hope you share your experiences and informed opinions with the list and not just with me in the future as a way of showing I'm not the only one with these concerns or issues. But in any case I always welcome hearing from Susan's fans, good words or bad, and I thank all for taking the time to write. This seems to have no end (okay, and I'm not doing anything to help that either) I know that many people out there feel frustration about the CD. And perhaps not all of us are getting to see Susan perform all that much and/or not hearing her on the radio. This is very frustrating. I personally would like to know when SW is on the radio for an interview on radio stations that are broadcast on the internet. I am sure that I could email someone in her camp and get that. As for the CD I'm sure that there will be a deal in place very very soon. Like I said before, SW is obviuosly an intelligent woman who can make her own decisions about managers and agents. It would strike me as odd if she stayed with a truly bad manager unless she had no other choice. There are many, many, many details that we don't know. We don't know if the record company they are negotiating with has forbade them to sell the CDs online.... we don't know if there is simply not enough money for them to pay for the production of enough CDs to sell online. We don't know a lot of things. Perhaps SW truly does have a crappy manager, or perhaps he is just fine and there are other factors limiting her success. Just because all of us think she is just absolutely wonderful does not mean that record execs, agents or club managers think she is absolutely wonderful. Again, I don't think that SWs manager is not listening to her fans. Otherwise he would not be booking her in a city on the request of a single fan nor would he immediately answer an email from a fan asking for a venue phone number! My goodness he even apologized several times in an email to me just because a gig had been canceled on short notice.... EFO and a few other gigs that weekend at that same venue were canceled too.... so it was not the fault of any managers. I think its great that there are so many sweet people like Ron (thanks Ron for starting the CD offers... it was very generous of you) and others who offered to buy CDs and ship them out for fans. And other great people who give out live concert boots to those who can't get enough of hearing SW live. The Idea about CarTalk was excellent! and If anyone out there can make a very high quality MP3 (ie 160Kps or higher) of Big Car off of NNF you can send it to me somehow and I will burn it onto a CD and send it to Car Talk myself (I have been wanting to call them and ask a car question anyway... so this would be a good oppurtunity). I just don't feel that the list is a good forum for insulting an artists management. I don't feel that public insults are a good thing at all.... None of this converstaion is helping anyone. Its one thing to say "aaaargh I am frustrated b/c I want to buy a CD online" and its another to blame your frustrations on someone being lazy (when that might not be the case at all). I do understand that there is a definite possibility that SW's manager is not doing what he needs to do for her, but then again that's just one possibility out of many. I say spend the energy on doing what little part you can in order to help out the career of someone who you admire as an artist. We can send CDs to independent music stations that play folk and jazz. I will send a used copy of LGSG that I found a while back to the radio station here in Pittsburgh WYEP if they already do not have one. Plus I will try and get a mixed CD of Susan's jazzier music to someone I know in Rochester NY who is (or was?) a DJ for a Jazz show on Public Radio. And the Car Talk thing if someone helps me out with the song. I also know the host of a radio show in North Carolina off of a college station to whom I have also promised a sampler of SWs music for her to play (and since she is the professor who organized students to get enough signatures to get Dar on campus for a freee concert I am sure that she has a high listernership) So, hopefully the next time I write an email it will concern clothes or something fun like that! (farewell to the cheetah shirt and hello to pants with lots of writing on them!) ~Simona (who wishes for peace on the list and in the world at large) Rjabalos@aol.com wrote: In a message dated 10/23/01 1:33:07 PM Eastern Daylight Time, owner-believers-digest@smoe.org writes: > I usually refrain from giving 'netiquette lessons, but when someone gets > really vehement about their point of view, it tends to prompt an equally > vehement response, and that's when things start going downhill. It's really fun, because I feel more connected to Susan and her fans than to some of the other folk lists that I'm on. I think these discussions have been very important, and I do hope that the information gets back to Susan so she can digest it and consider it. Any of you who are in direct touch with her, I hope you will pass on to her that she should read the list comments beginning on 10/21. Finally, I would like to pass on what one happy Ron Rosen CD customer had to say: "I had an absolutely unbelievably horrible day yesterday, and was in the middle of a nervous breakdown when I got home last night, but then saw the package from you! All is right with the world again." I must say that having women write to me with comments like, "If there's anything I can ever do for you..." is making me, as Susan would say... "frisky." I've only heard a few songs but I like it. Susan has opened for big acts - I saw her open for Joan Armatrading and Richard Thompson a few years back. She then came back and played the Freight. I'm not sure enough west coasters knew her before she did those opener gigs - now she sells out the Freight. Catie Curtis opens for Mary Chapin Carpenter and Dar Williams and still comes back and plays the smaller clubs. There are lots of ways to build an audience.
