I'm guessing here, though, that if you're from Australia, you'll think she has no accent. Is that right Sherlyn? ;-) I agree, the new LP has a countryish feel to it, although a few sound more rock n' roll than anything she's ever done. "All of The Above", in particular, reminds me of some of The Pretenders' gutsiest work. And I absolutely love the techno-punkish but laid back treatment given to "Everybody's Talking". It's produced by Colin Linden. Earl P.S.: Don't fight, we're all ecstatic about the new release yet frustrated that the whole world isn't. Lowe" Subject: Colin Linden Okay, I have not yet heard the CD, but thanks to Earl, I now know who produced the project. Colin Linden is a well-known Canadian musician, has won a number of Juno awards, and seems to have an extensive blues background. He played guitar in Bruce Cockburn's band during the 'Dart to the Heart' tour. He has a number of CDs out, and this is a review by Marc Greilsamer from Amazon for the new CD "Raised by Wolves". Interesting ...- how did Susan and Colin hook up?? "Editorial Reviews Amazon.com This Toronto native blends the bite of a bluesman, the grit of a soul singer, and the contemplation of a folkie into a compelling cohesive whole. Well-respected in Canada, where he's nabbed a few Juno Awards, Linden recorded much of this record in New Orleans, and the vibe of the Deep South pulses through these 14 cuts. Linden is a formidable guitarist, heartfelt vocalist, and thoughtful songwriter, but his real talent lies in the way that he seamlessly fuses all these aspects. The production, courtesy of Linden and John Whynot, is wonderfully dirty and raw, sounding a bit like his buddies in the Band. Rather than self-consciously updating traditional styles, Linden allows his taste for roots music to come out naturally and effortlessly, resulting in an invigorating, completely contemporary sound. Though he's been recording for more than 20 years, Linden is ripe for wider discovery. --Marc Greilsamer " Charisse Lowe HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Oct 2001 10:04:40 -0700 From: "Ron Rosen" Subject: New Non-Fiction There are fragments of some sort of articles on the cover and throughout the booklet of the CD. I asked Susan about it, and at that point I had not tried to read it all. She said, "Well have you read it?" I said, "Part of it. What you're telling me is I have to do my homework and get back to you." She said, "Well, there's a certain tone to it. Yeah, definitely a certain tone." Those of you who have plowed through it might want to comment. On first listen, I was not happy with the new CD because I said, "That's not Susan the way I know her. That's a whole other thing." There are only a few songs that approximate the Susan-in-concert experience. I said, "That's why I like Tin Angel." As is often the case, however, if I don't like something on first hearing, I end up liking it more than most other things. The more I listen to this CD the more I love it. Java Joe's is a somwhat informal venue because the audience is small, and because the performers walk through the audience to get to the stage. Ellis opened all four shows. It was my first time seeing him. I liked his intensity and I could see it as a reason why he and Susan liked working together. He seemed very nice and easy to talk to. I was sitting at a table right by the kitchen door. The performers came in and out by the kitchen door, so every time Susan had to go on and off stage for the different Ellis songs she would pass me and she would squeeze my shoulder or I'd give her a high hand shake. During 3,000 Miles a guy walked in with a TV camera, shot for about 2 minutes and left. Susan called out to him, and he said he was from Channel 9 and footage would be on the 10:00 O'Clock News, which of course Susan and Ellis would not be able to watch. No one seemed to know why the guy was there. For three of the four shows Ellis did at least one or two songs away from the mic, walking through the audience as he sang. Seeing four Ellis sets over a few days allowed me to get into his songs more and more. I enjoyed listening to him and I think the Susan / Ellis combination works well. Susan spoke about how pleasant the weather in San Diego is, said it was making her "frisky", and wondered how anyone (like a song writer) could ever get any work done here. As a fitting lead-in from the San Diego weather to Little Yellow House she said, "I guess you can be unhappy anywhere if you really commit to it." Introducing Courting the Muse she said, "When he first heard this song, the president of my record company said 'That's a great song about your cat.' I told him to listen again. He got back to me and said, 'That's a great song about your girlfriend.' I told him to listen again." She said that So Nice Seeing You Again was about "sex with the ex." At some point she mentioned the San Diego Zoo which led to "Do you know what this top I'm wearing is?" A few people said "Cheetah." She looked at them and said, "How did you know that?" A certain nameless person sitting by the kitchen door said, "From the Internet." This got a big laugh, but Susan said, "That's terrible. They talk about my clothes. Tell them I took my top off in San Diego. Oh that's terrible." I felt a little queasy for awhile as the message seemed to be, "You internet guys have no life." There I was, with my notebook, keeping a setlist. Wanted to disappear. I shook it off after awhile. Later a guy asked me what newspaper I write for. When Susan came out for the encore, she stood in the back by where I was sitting and leaned against a partition and clapped and hooted along with the rest of the audience for SW to come out and do and encore. Very funny! "The Drummer" October 18, Java Joe's, San Diego In the morning I boxed up all the CDs for shipment and put on the delivery confirmation address labels that I had printed off the USPS website before I left home. Luckily the main San Diego post office was just down the road from my motel. The clerk had no idea how to charge me or deal with the labels that I had gotten off the internet. I said, "But you must have to scan them, otherwise why would they have bar codes and how would anyone ever know that they were mailed or from where?. I wasn't even IN San Diego when I printed these." She spent about 10 minutes "in the back" straightening this out. That evening I came in to Java Joes and, seeking more Susan action, requested the table by the kitchen door. Two women, Bonnie and Marie, whom I'd seen there the night before joined me at my table. We started taking about artists and they mentioned a very popular San Diego folk duo called Berkley Hart. The mentioned that they'd seen them at the Belly Up Tavern opening for another group. I mentioned that I'd seen Jefferson Starship there awhile back. They said that was the same show and that Berkley Hart had opened. They said they were big Jefferson Airplane / Starship fans from the early days, and I said I was too. Turns out Bonnie is good friends with a woman on the Jefferson Airplane List whom I've actually met up with for a Steve Kimock show in San Francisco. Stay with me here... Ellis Paul took the stage with a guy who had a large djembe (hour-glass shaped African drum). He was Jeff Berkley from the same Berkely Hart we had been talking about ! Jeff, someone Ellis had known, accompanied Ellis on Sweet Mistakes and added a whole new aspect to the song. He did a few other songs with Ellis during the set, including, I believe, 3,000 Miles, with Susan and Ellis. During Susan's set, she called a surprised Jeff Berkley back to the stage to accompany her on Like Bonsai. It was great and Susan said, "This guy is just right there. This is so amazing and unusual." Jeff said, "I see you've worked with other drummers !" Susan said that during her solos songs she doesn't keep a strict beat but Jeff's drumming had really given things a whole new dimension. Susan did the new song Philantropy which is just a great jazz song. She does it with the Jenkins (short neck, hand made in Texas) guitar, but seated at the piano. When it came time to do Standing in My Own Way, Susan looked for Jeff and didn't find him. Ellis said, "I'll see if I can drum him up," and headed back to the kitchen. Jeff joined Susan on stage and they cooked, with Jeff doing a long solo at the end, warning, "I could go on all night." When Jeff left the stage, Susan asked him if he was free this weekend to come with them to LA and Northern California. "We'll talk after the show and see if we can work it out." They actually didn't work it out, but it was one of those great moments where musicians discover something and they want to keep going with it. Ellis told me they planned to work with Jeff in the future. For one of the encores, it was Susan, Ellis and Jeff on Knockin' on Heaven's Door was just classic with Ellis on harmonica and guitar, Susan on guitar, and Jeff on drum. It was as good a version of that song as one could ever hear. Before the show, I'd bought a special gold pen so Susan could sign my postcard of her playing at the Ark in Ann Arbor. She did, and it came out very cool, with the gold autograph on the dark backgroud playing off her cheetah top. October 19, McCabe's Santa Monica There were no surprises at the McCabe's shows, and the set lists, to my slight disappointment, were much the same for both shows. I was hoping Susan would vary things for the second show as she did in Eugene, but she didn't. I was also hoping to hear Heart of Gold and Heaven's Door again. Before the show I met former list member and Berkeley School of Music student Paul Kim, who is working at a recording studio in LA. My friend Gina also reintroduced me to Severin Browne, brother of Jackson, who is a local folk singer / songwriter. A few observations: On Cole Porter Susan sometimes does the NASCAR line, but one time she did the original "wax my car." She did not do any college fight songs in any of the four Cole Porters. After one Cole Porter she played the music for "Anything Goes" after another she didn't. She commented that Anything Goes would be a good song that would really bug the Taliban. Susan is not playing "Walk Right Back" at the end of Much at All nowadays. She did the Mies Van der Rohe (a cappella to the tune of 3 Blind Mice) song in San Diego and during one of the McCabe's shows. She commented that since Ellis had suggested the Frank Lloyd Wright verse, it was their first co-write. Part of the Frank Lloyd Wright verse goes something like this: "He cantilevered his homes to the hilt. But most of them were badly built. So if your house is beginning to tilt. It's a Frank Lloyd Wright."
