Susan has pre-existing sales... of this album at concerts and of other past albums on labels through distribution channels. I think it might have something to do with any potential record label knowing that the artist's loyal fan base will buy it up in droves. They may not be so eager to sign with knowledge that it's already saturated her primary market. I'll bet it's that. One of the things I really like about Susan is that she concentrates more on doing live shows then she does on generating albums. If you have a gander at Sherlyn's Lyrics site (http://www.bluecalabash.com.au/sw/index.cfm) only about 1/2 of her songs listed appear on CD's. The remainder are unreleased, but we've been lucky enough to hear some of them here and there. And my whole contribution to the "why didn't they..." discussion is that unless you have run a record business (not just any business, but this specifically) chances are you (whoever) don't have more than a vague idea of the possible problems. (hear those mocs squeaking, Paul?) Same is true of most any business. But venting is OK - we're all frustrated! Now, to help relieve the frustration - I will be at the 4 Corners show Nov 1. That leaves just about enough time to send some $$ if you get on it now. I can pick up 10 or so, would prefer to have cash in hand, but long-time list members may qualify for exceptions. Drop me an off-list e-mail if you are interested. and let's hope our frustration turns out to be worth it! Hm - actually, I would have to disagree with this. I tend to think of Rounder (or at least of Philo) as being rather passive - they generally don't push their artists marketing-wise as much as they could, especially not when it comes to cross-genre marketing and/or seeking out new markets. Instead they tend to let the artist's own momentum and touring sell the albums for them. I also feel that once they reach a certain "size" artists tend to leave Rounder and move to other labels - Patty Larkin left for Windham Hill, Christine Lavin and SONiA of disappear fear both elected to go indie. Of course, there are exceptions to everything I've said above (Cheryl Wheeler and Alison Krauss being two) but I do think Susan is already beyond the point where being signed to Rounder would be all that beneficial to her career, especially considering the multi-genre appeal of her music. But then again, I don't tend to read a lot of magazines, and I don't listen to the radio much either. Most of my information comes from the Internet, or from talking to people (including one friend who is a former Rounder artist). And of course I have one of the biggest pro-Susan biases you've ever seen. So this is all dredged up from the morass inside my head and I could be way off base here, I dunno... Speaking of new markets, though - I get a definite country vibe from the new album. I guess recording in Nashville will do that to you. "Big Car" in particular reminds me of Mary Chapin Carpenter's song "Shut Up and Kiss Me". So there's new market potential right there - maybe Susan could get signed to a country label. But then, if the next planned album is indeed the jazz piano romantic song cycle, that wouldn't really work too well... Time to stop babbling! At least temporarily... - -sherlyn ps - for those of you going to the shows this weekend, keep an eye out for me. I'm short, asian and have glasses and (apparently) a funny accent... Sherlyn mentions a Nashville sound to the CD, so I'm curious. Ron is missing in action out in San Diego, so we've had no updates on the GREAT CD PURCHASE of 2001..... Rounder does wonderful catalogues and has a great website, but no overt advertising unless you are Alison Krauss (who has chosen to stay with Rounder because they let her do what she wants). And Rounder's not going out of business any time soon. I still like Red House and HighTone for Susan - she'd be in great company. Then again, they may feel they already have enough acts that fill her genre. Vanguard might also be a good home for Susan. I actually emailed a friend at Rounder this morning, told them that Susan's management was shopping a label, and gave them her manager's name and contact information. Cannot hurt. Agreed. woj and I were just discussing this and we both think Signature Sounds would be a good home for Susan.
