Susan said it would have been great. they did a duet of St. Mary's in Susan's first show and about three or four duets in Ellis's. no Ellis in Susan's 2nd, but she played along with Ellis for his entire 2nd. i made a set list, though there are a few i don't know proper titles for, and if anyone's curious let me know, i'll post it. i'm tired and happy, goodnight all, john in Eugene OR HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Oct 2001 09:43:25 -0700 From: "john vavrek" Subject: set list okay every one!! i'd want a set list too, so i don't know why i balked last night. something about sleep deprivation. which is what Ellis kept talking about in the second show, as he'd just flown from Boston the day before and played Portland that night. it was a beautiful October day in Oregon yesterday. the true blue sky of autumn. Susan called it "move here weather." they also both commented on the diversity and friendliness of Eugene, and the abundance of trees and lack of huge buildings. but when you live in Chicago or Boston, these things must seem striking. here, we just think them as beautiful and hey! that's why we live here instead of Chi or Beantown. now to the real task, the set lists. i didn't write down all of Ellis's but i'll say that their duets are amazing! 3000 miles was great with the harmony. Conversations with a Ghost, oh heck, all of Ellis's songs either have that tender ethereal quality, or just drive you home. and my gawd, where does he get that vocal range? but i digress, first show: My Soul's not at War (piano) Shade of Gray (guitar) Yellow House Big Car Barbed Wire Boys St. Mary's of Regret (duet with Ellis - great with 2 guitars) Misery & Happiness Like Bonsai - --then back to the piano-- Tall Drink of Water Maybe if I Sang Cole Porter Baby is a Light Sleeper? (i don't know this one) I Can't be New? (nor this one) the instant standing ovation brought her back for: May I Suggest as i said she did three or four with Ellis; he kept calling her back. hey, who wouldn't??!!! they ended the first show with several together, including some good covers. most notable was Susan's guitar part on Heart of Gold (Neil never had it so good), and their duet of Let it Be. it was inevitable i guess that they played Knocking on Heaven's Door, but at least it wasn't Freebird! the first show was very up and exciting. i had a good visit with Susan between shows, and she said she wanted to be more rocking in her second show. BUT, there was only about 40% of the people there, and you could feel the energy go into a more living room quality. Ellis joked that if he and Susan lived together they would be doing this right now in the garage. while he was also changing the oil...! Susan said that since the pressure of the first show was over, she was going to play the songs she wanted to play, and not a lot of repeats. it was awesome because in the two shows i got to hear almost everything i wanted! Nefertiti's Dream First World Woman All of the Above Sorry About Jesus (followed by the humorous realization that she was performing at a Christian college) Courting the Muse Shade of Gray Misery & Happiness Ode to Billie Joe Philanthropy? (don't know, but it was great!) No One Needs to Know? (same as above!) Much at All So Nice? Standing in My Own Way no Encore, on with the show!! she was really funny because it was clear she was getting tired and there was a lot to come yet. when she started in on the piano, she played a few snippets from her "romantic cycle," and was so in command of her art and her audience that five seconds of Cole Porter and Tall Drink were enough to set up Much at All. well, and she was as funny as, as, Susan Werner! Ellis came on and explained about flying from Boston the day before, playing Portland that night, driving to Eugene, two radio shows, dinner, EXHAUSTION!! JET LAG!! as he said, it was 3:30 eastern time when they finally quit. and he was showing signs of wear! but he was excellent, and he talked Susan into playing along for his whole set, which was a treat. and honestly, it seemed they played even longer the second show, despite the lateness and the smaller crowd. what a beautiful gift they gave us last night. yes, i got the new disc. i apologize for not offering to buy and mail copies as some of you have (you ARE a saint Ron Rosen), but i know that i wouldn't be able to do a good job, with the busy-ness of my life right now. so, accept this post as my part in the scheme of things. last note, she was talking to a couple radio people at the break (i was there too), and she asked the usual question; do you think the blouse print is leopard or jaguar. they made comments about the size and spacing of the dots, but i just said, "well, it's synthetic!" Susan laughed and said, "you're right! it IS synthetic!" i was going to ask if she thought they held down an animal and did a pencil rubbing or something, but there was more fun stuff to talk about. she asked me how i heard about the concert and i told her from Ron Rosen. she smiled and said what a great booster you are. and you are! well that's epic, even for me. back to my coffee and guitars! john v eugene oregon - -how many deaths will it take till he knows that too many people have died- HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Oct 2001 11:27:50 -0700 From: "Ron Rosen" Subject: Re: set list (Hard Ducks and Downspouts) Thanks for all the info from the land of no sales tax where you can't pump your own gas, John. I'm really glad Susan is doing different songs for double shows. I've decided to go all out and see the two San Diego shows as well as the two Santa Monica shows. Hopefully, I'll be packaging CDs in my motel room in San Diego on Thursday -- security might nab me, "What are you doing with scissors and tape, sir? Why are you sending packages to Iowa, Indiana, and Kansas?" The songs you wondered about are "Light Sleeper", "I Can't Be New", "No One Needs to Know", "So Nice Seeing You Again" -- I'm not familiar with "Philanthropy" either. You can check out the lyrics of most of the ones that have been around awhile at Sherlyn Koo's site http://www.bluecalabash.com.au/sw/index.cfm . Speaking of which, Sherlyn should be checking with reports of Portland and Seattle soon. > it was a beautiful October day in Oregon yesterday. the true blue sky of > autumn. And all the while I thought Portland was just a downspout. I guess that explains why she didn't play Petaluma Afternoons ! I'm glad to see she did My Soul's Not At War Anymore. I was thinking about it yesterday in terms of the current world situation. Dance with the sailors and kiss the marines... Thanks for keeping my name front and center in the SW consciousness. ;-) I was wondering if you remembered way back in May when I told you about the Eugene shows.
