The first row is the nut. http://www.cyberbites.com/marleys_ghost/ HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Sep 2001 14:10:01 -0500 From: "Chuck Ellingson" Subject: Madison, WI I saw Susan last night in our state's capital city. She was great,as usual, even though she admitted to me afterward that the tour has her a bit tired. She didn't seem tired at all onstage! Before the show, the announcer commented on Susan and Ellis' gig 'neath the now-ravished WTC towers. But then Susan appeared and threw all of our mourning deep into the closet as she rocked the house. And rocking the house was indeed a challenge, as the Pres House is a church-like venue, complete with stained-glass windows, vaunted ceilings and carpeting, which did nothing to dampen the echo of the hall. (Susan made a comment about a flying buttress and another about her Lutheran roots.) Nothing, as far as the solo set list or the banter with Ellis, that hasn't already been expressed here on the list... Susan, accompanying herself on guitar, performed (forgive me please if I mangle any titles) "Loneliness and Love" and "Little Yellow House," and then threw in "St. Mary's of Regret" before launching into "Like Bonsai" and "Happiness and Misery." She then moved to the piano to jazzify us with "Tall Drink of Water," (which segued beautifully into) "Maybe if I Sang Cole Porter," and (another newer one) "Philanthropy." She spoke of the romance song cycle, performed "Much At All," and another newer one with lyrics like (forgive my poor memory, please) "let's do this again, again." Susan picked up her guitar again to do "Standing in My Own Way" and encored on the piano with I remember not what. (AARGH!!!) Susan joined Ellis for his third number, "3,000 miles" (?) and then again at the end of the gig to duet on "Heart of Gold, " and "Knockin' on Heaven's Door." Susan commented to me that she thought Ellis did a better job of compensating for the echo of the venue by forsaking the sound system and performing unplugged after they sang together for the first time that evening, but I told her that I thought she was great - - regardless! One more week 'til the new CD, gang! Can you say "stocking stuffer"? (I knew ya could.) One more week 'til the new CD, gang! Can you say "stocking : stuffer"? (I knew ya could.) Cozy place for a gig, eh Chuck? I was there too; happily dragged my mom and a sis along to share in the musical healing. Were you part of the Lutheran Conscience up in the choir loft that Suze referred to? Ellis also had written on both guitars *anti terror machine* - said he'd done it the night before only to realize that it'd been done in permanant marker. Not a bad tatt to put on an instrument, if you ask me. Susan gives great piano; that new one "lets do this again, again" is a fine addition that I think highlights her ivory-tickling talents. It also worked great with the romance storyline she had going ... couple meets, falls in love ----> lets go right to the breakup and the end .. but wait, is it? There were two pieces that Susan performed which were especially meaningful to me last night, given my concert companions and current events ... Like Bonsai (my mom) and May I Suggest (my sis). Three sets -at least- of very wet eyes being slopped up at the end of the latter. I don't get out to a lot of shows, but one thing struck me about the Susan/Willie Porter (saw that one about 6 mos ago) and Susan/Ellis Paul shows both (esp. thinking of last night's show): Some people have the gift of being able to reassure, to coax out a guffaw, to comfort, to put *at ease*. Some people have amazing musical talents. Seems to me that Susan and these two fellas have both. And I feel blessed when I arrive home after such a concert and can fall into bed feeling like I just had a deep muscle massage. That's so cool.
