I am a bit over folked this week, not as over folked as after falcon ridge, but close. THis past wednesday I saw dave and tracy (carter/grammer) in concert at this great little venue in pittsburgh called the Club Cafe. The venue has a mere 110 seats so even the worst seats are practically up on stage. Dave and Tracy are real troopers. They played from 8:20 to about 10:30 and then came back for an encore of two songs. I got their signatures on my copy of drum hat buddha and am very happy. I would give a setlist except that I could not possibley remeber all the songs they sung. They sung my favorites 236-6132, Gentle Arms of Eden and Ordinary Town. These two are amazing musicians and for anyone who has never seen them live or never heard them then make your next CD purchase one of their CDs. Their style is not quite definable. There is a hint of country and twang in their music, but they are definately within the realm of modern folk. They sing about everything from politics, to love to mysticism. That's it for my dave and tracy promo... look below for my gushing aout seeing susan werner and ellis paul on friday night !!! Then on friday I decided to drive three hours each way to columbus to see the great suzie w and ellis paul. They appeared at the six string concert series and I was personally dissapointed that it was not a sold out show. I had never heard ellis paul and was thinking that I am not too thrilled about sitting through this guy's act waiting to hear my absolute favorite susan werner. But, he just rocked! so much so that I parted with my money after the show and bought his double live CD at the merch table. Susan also rocked, as usual. THis was the first time I saw her perform outside of a festival. its a different feeling being inside at a folk concert (dave and tracy were my first indoor folk concert!). She seemed dissapointed at the relatively small audience (and she also seemed very tired). but she too seems to be a real trooper and put on a great albeit short set (only about an hour). Ellis did make fun of the smaller audience saying that he was glad that the audience at least outnumbered the performers that night. And susan and ellis did two covers of other songs together. Iwill be able to give a setlist of tis concert because I was able to record it. for the fashion police out there I have to mention that susan wore a cheetah print shirt. i saw her in a similar shirt at marposa and falcon ridge and she did say after the concert that they were al different blouses and that she did launder them in between performances (she definaly has a sense of humour). Susan also mentioned that she is mentioned in a book called good in bed by karen weiner. she said that she has not yet read the book nor does she know the author. But, she was glad that someone noticed (wink wink) and I thought I would add that in for anyone looking for something to read. That's it for my rambles in this email. If anyone truly wants the recording from this concert email me and I will put you on a list for it. I have not yet transferred it to my hard drive and to a CD and it may be at least a few weeks till I have the time to do it (since its time consuming and I have to edit out audience conversation). I hope everyone is having a good weekend and please, for goodness sake, stop arguing! we all need to settle down, listen to some music and maybe take a valium or a valrian root pill or something. peace, Simona Loberant Simona L. And when you're standing at the front of the line, people tend to ask you their questions! So those of us up front couldn't answer correctly!!! I solved that problem by calling into the club on the cellphone and getting the scoop, which was that doors would open at 7 and that the show would start somewhere between 7:30-8:00. Which is exactly what happened - promptly at 7:45, Dave Siglin came out and gave his usual monosyllabic, no-frills introduction - which this time around was pretty much 'please welcome Ellis Paul'. For those of you who care (like me!!), Ellis cut of all his hair!! What a shock! He opened with 'Get Ready For It', then 'Maria's Beautiful Mess'. Then barely into 'The Ballad of Chris McCandless', he broke a string, which he said was 'a sign of my own vitality'. While changing the string, he sang an a cappella number possibly called 'Beautiful World'. Then, right back into 'Chris McCandless - and immediately broke another string! At which point he yelled "JANE!!", who promptly came out and took the ornery guitar, and she was followed by Susan, who brought out her guitar for him in case he needed it. Somebody yelled out "must be the hair!!" to which Ellis replied "you start looking like a Republican and suddenly things change!" He then went with a beautiful new song called "Words", then, based on audience approval, revisited 'Chris McCandless',and did it from the beginning, and actually told a bit of the story behind the song. By this time Jane had brought out the guitar with the string replaced. Then, 'The Speed of Trees' and 'Sweet Mistakes'. He then spoke of the very list of banned songs that has been circulated here, and announced that his song 'Angel in Manhattan' was being played every day on WFUV, and would probably very much be on the list of banned songs if they knew about it! He then did the songb&.I got goosebumps when he sang 'it was a day like any other dayb&a Tuesday afternoon'. Wow. Then, 'Did Galileo Pray'. Then a short aside about the TV show 'Schoolhouse Rocks'b&.and a complete presentation of 'We the People', with what seemed like a lot of folk singing along in the audience. He told his story about his cell phone being stolen, and closed with 'The World Ain't Slowing Down'. Then for the encore, he was joined by Susan - "a Sonny and Cher Moment" - and they wondered who would be who; someone yelled again that Ellis shouldn't have cut his hair, because then he could have been Cher - and he did a pretty good impression of her - too funny! Anywayb&.they joined for Ellis' '3,000 Miles', and it was great. Then, a very short break, followed by Susan. She did 'Time Between Trains' and 'Shades of Gray'. Then got her usual digs in about UofM footballb&saying that she didn't even know there was a Western Michigan University (who UM had creamed in football that day), then proceeded to ask 'is there an Eastern? A Central? Northern?' etc. and said that U of M kept them all cowering in their respective corners of the stateb&'Hail to the Conquering heros - even the fight song is oppressive'. Then, 'Too Many Rooms' and 'St. Mary's of Regrets'. She was wearing a cheetah print blouse and brown pants - she specified that it was indeed cheetah and NOT leopard. It zipped down the front and she had it unzipped pretty far, and glanced down once and did a double takeb&then after 'St.Mary'sb&', said 'I feel like we're on a first date, sob&' and zipped up her blouse a bit. Then started playing, stopped, and zipped it up the rest of the way, saying with a smile 'You'll see'b&.and did 'Misery/Happiness' - and got a big laugh on the line about 'looking down her blouse'. 'Like Bonsai', 'Big Big Car', then to the piano for 'Tall Drink of Water', 'Maybe if I sang Cole Porter', 'Light Sleeper'b&and then she said, in the interest of time, she'd skip right to the break-up, and did 'Much at All' and 'I Can't Be New'. Then back to the guitar, where she announced that the new CD will be out in 2 weeks, and so would be available when she's back at the Ark on 11/9 for their annual fundraiser - for which she will 'put on heels and a dress and totter about'. She ended with a 'kick-ass' (her words) 'Standing in My Own Way'. First encore was the divine 'May I Suggest'b&I was thrilled to finally hear that song for the first time, and it's simply beautiful. I asked afterward, and she said it's the last cut on the new CD. Second encore was with Ellis, who joined her on guitar and harmonica for 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door'. Then Susan to piano, with Ellis saying 'we haven't done this song yet', and they proceeded to absolutely nail Ellis' 'Conversation with a Ghost'. I was sort of disappointed that they didn't do one of Susan's songs with Ellis helpingb&but it was still wonderful. They seemed to be having fun together, and both spoke of enjoying their current tour. Overall, Susan kept her specific commentary on the events in NYC/DC to a minimum, though she did say of 'W' that 'I didn't vote for the guy', but that he had done good things in the past week. She did seem pretty upbeat and happy. It was a great show!
