"Beautiful City" Out of the ruins and rubble Out of the smoke Out of a night of struggle Can we see a ray of hope? One pale thin ray Reaching for the day We can build a beautiful city Yes we can, yes we can We can build a beautiful city Not a city of angels But we can build a city of Man We many not reach the ending But we can start Slowly but truly mending Brick by brick, heart by heart Now, maybe now, we start learning how We can build a beautiful city Yes we can, yes we can We can build a beautiful city Not a city of angels But we can build a city of Man When your trust is all but shattered When your faith is all but killed You can give up, bitter and battered Or you can slowly start to build... A beautiful city Yes we can, yes we can We can build a beautiful city Not a city of angels But finally a city of Man. Stephen Schwartz originally wrote this song for the movie version of "Godspell." He revised the lyrics for a production intended to raise money for relief following the riots in Los Angeles which developed after the Rodney King beating verdict. In the film, the final chorus of "All For The Best" was performed on the roof of the World Trade Center. My favorite version of this song is the one sung by Laura Benanti on "The Stephen Schwartz Album," available at http://www.fynsworthalley.com/catalog/catalogpage.cgi?page=62 - -Tim HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Sep 2001 21:13:52 -4000 From: "Susan Werner News" Subject: Susan Werner schedule and cancellations Hi all, Due to the tragic events in the US, all of the Canadian gigs have been cancelled.
