Sold 75 *million* albums of his own. Damn. Janis Ian tells the story of moving to Nashville fearing a homophobic reception. Ol' Chet got word of this, and with a few phone calls let it be known that messin' with Janis was messin' with him. I'm gonna go cry. Been moping around ever since, watching his videos and trying to play like him. Don't even come close. And to make this a little on-topic for the Believers list... his version of "Vincent" (which he recorded two or three times in different arrangements) is heartbreakingly beautiful. His harmonic knowledge and his willingness to push himself have always been inspirational to me. Plus, his best music is just plain fun! And fun to perform too. And having seen him perform live a dozen times, I can tell you what a warm, witty guy he was in person. (At one concert at Valley Forge Music Fair, he said "That was a song by Oscar Hammerstein called 'Lover Come Back To Me,' which is a pretty good idea....") As Chet sang in one of his most heartbreaking songs... "No matter how hard I try, No matter how many tears I cry, No matter how many years go by, I still can't say goodbye." - -Tim - ----- Original Message ----- From: Charlie Sweeney Subject: Mr. Guitar goes to the great jam in the sky > Chet Atkins, master guitarist, producer, arranger, RCA > executive, and exceptional human being has passed away > at the age of 77. > > Sold 75 *million* albums of his own.
