Anyway, he dragged me down to The Wheelroom (at the University of Iowa Student Union) to see his younger cousin, the transfer student, perform at open mic night. She performed mostly covers, Kansas, Chicago, Billy Joel, etc. I was way more into The Clash, Sex Pistols, George Thorogood and The Who at the time, but her passion and voice surprised me even then. He actually didn't have to ask me twice, several months later when she performed again. My, how times have changed. I think Earl wins the award for being a non-family member who has seen Susan the longest: since her early early early days, appreciated her talent, and continues to actively follow her to this day. Susan was only in her teens back then! Any others out there from way back when? Pamela (who first saw Susan because I liked her Born A Little Late song on Christine Lavin's Follow That Road compilation, and went to see her during her first (I think) visit to Seattle at The Tractor Tavern in @ 1995. Susan glanced at a large tractor piece over the bar, and commented that she was probably the only one in the place that grew up with tractors. To have seen Susan in her early days doing covers! Speaking of George Thorogood, there's a small dive type club in LA called The Joint. It's owned by Jack Tempchin who wrote Already Gone and Peaceful, Easy Feeling for the Eagles. Every Monday night Jack jams with a few of his friends including famed guitarist Waddy Wachtel. British Blues man Terry Reid (who turned downed Led Zepplin but told them to check out his friend, Robert Plant) is usually there. The night I was there Johnny Rivers and George Thorogood showed up and played. Speaking of the Who, I saw them last summer for the first time and could not believe how good they were. Don't let anyone tell you they are over the hill. > Well, I guess I have to blame my roommate at the time (1983-1984), who > just happened to be Susan's > cousin (she has quite a few).
