I have to blame Mary-Chapin Carpenter. I was a big MCC fan, and Susan was opening for her at Riverbend in 1995 (as far as I know, this was the only time she played on the Coca-Cola "big stage" instead of the preferrable and more intimate Bank of America stage under the bridge). I was so impressed with her that I went back to see her there later in the week and bought "LOTGSG." The next year, I went to see her again and bought "MSN" (I could only afford one CD, and a friend recommended that one over "LATA" for some reason). By then, I was totally hooked and scheduled my entire Riverbend volunteer schedule every year around when Susan was playing! Visit My Home Page! Yahoo! I have to blame Usenet news group, Alan Rowoth's folk music listserv, and someone posting as 'ghost'. I had graduated from Prodigy to reading Usenet news groups, particularly rec.music.folk. And became intrigued by the descriptions of this singer-songwriter, "Susan Werner". Didn't sound like the "typical" east coast s/s that was going around - a combination of heavy lyrics & a voice of the type that would grab me! (and there was the one poster, 'ghost', who persisted in so roundly slamming her as a sham that he/she stirred up a lot of positive critiquing!) So to my delight somewhere in probably mid-1994, I see that Leo Kottke is playing the Park West in Chicago - haven't seen him since the 70s - and his opener is "Susan Werner". Immediately got a ticket. And from the bar seating to the side of the main floor, became totally hooked! Despite her apologies for fighting a cold, she managed to win over a lot of the audience that night as well -- at the intermission, I was glad I had scarfed up both of her CDs when I first came in -- before the end of intermission, they sold out of all of her CDs! Anyhow, this intro, followed by 3 other appearances in Chicago within the year, including a great show for less than 25 people in the tiny performance room at Urbus Orbis - led to my addiction. I began prosletyzing my internet friends ... when "Live at Tin Angel" went out of print, I tracked down a dealer, bought a bunch of copies, and sent them out across the States! I think that intro show included "Snow White" and a bit of Piaf, but was all guitar. Course, little did I expect that moves closer to Chicago would shift the balance from at least 3 appearances each 12 months to 12 months between appearances and many of those split bills ... but, success is good, I guess...
