The bio is there as a resource for press, and if well written, is often snatched up in whole or in part and then incorporated into the writer's piece. Common practice. Seems to make things easier for both parties. I've written press releases before with the intent/hope being that those on the receiving end *will* "steal" it. Then the event, artist, or issue is represented in the light that I see fit. Writers on a deadline might be more apt to print/cover whatever I'm working on if they can cut and paste in some of the facts along with their personal thoughts. If it means my project gets covered, I'm never bothered by this kind of thing in the least. - -------------------- Kellie Lin Knott klknott@earthlink.net > From: meredith > Date: Sun, 15 Apr 2001 14:45:51 -0400 > To: believers@smoe.org > Subject: Re: Friday, April 13 in The Rockland Review > > Hi, > > Ron replied: > >> I don't believe that's a copyright violation. I am a huge fan of Darrell Scott, and I know this will be a tremendous show. So I'll add 'are you producing SW's next CD?' to my list of questions for after the performance. And if you've never seen/heard Darrell, by all means check him out. In retrospect my words were unnecessarily harsh and hurtful ("lifted" in particular is an emotionally charged word I clearly shouldn't have used). I'm writing to apologize to Margery and anyone else who felt offended after reading my post. I shouldn't have written about a subject I know so little about. Thanks to the citizens of this community, I'm now better educated. I've never worked in PR, my degree is in computer science. I worked for one summer writing editorials for The Daily Iowan (student newspaper), that's the extent of my writing career! I had a college writing instructor (introductory class) explain to me in layman's terms how to avoid plagiarism. She said to read the facts you're trying to paraphrase, close the book (or other source), take a deep breath, and rephrase whatever it is in your own words. Since that apparently didn't happen here, I jumped to the (wrong) conclusion that this constituted plagiarism. This community has taught me that freshman-year rhetoric classes teachers don't have the answers to all of life's questions (uh-oh, I hope I didn't offend anybody else with that line! I love teachers, I really do, my mother is a teacher. Really! ;-) ) However, I still feel that perhaps introducing the paragraph with a phrase like "According to her website, ... might be a little clearer? Maybe it isn't standard practice in the PR industry, or required by law, it just seems friendlier, that's all.
