In lieu of interviewing the artist directly which is difficult when she's on the road and when I've got a full-time job (that has nothing to do with my freelance writing, which is, by the way, "free" to the newspaper), I take basic bio information as it is provided by the artist and/or her/his agent in order to get it correct. As Ron pointed out, I added "piano at age 11" because I felt this was a relevant fact that was missing. I hereby give Susan and her agent permission to add that phrase into their paragraph that omitted that fact!!!! (Ha, ha.) As an accredited member of the PRSA (Public Relations Society of America), I strive for accurate reporting of the facts and abhor plagiarism. By including biographical content provided by the artist and/or record company in order to promote her event which benefits the artist and/or record company, the reader is assured accuracy. As Ron pointed out, this is the purpose of a press kit and bio information provided. I'm sure most artists would LOVE to have any part of their bio printed anywhere it can be printed for exposure, especially when the article wholeheartedly endorses the artist and promotes the event! The rest is poetic license. For example, I had not one night to spend in Duluth, but two. However, do you REALLY care what I did on my second night there? (I assure you it did not match up to the first). Also, as I was writing about her love songs, I included reference to "Snow White" which she did NOT play in Duluth (but that I heard a week later). Perhaps she will play it at The Turning Point in Piermont on April 27. I would dare not take poetic license with Susan's bio. I spoke with her manager and emailed her road manager to have the article reviewed prior to submission. The article was "approved" by her road manager. Earl's intention of protecting Susan is admirable and I share and applaud that intent. However, his energies might be better focused towards more productive pursuits, like chasing down litterers or parents who dodge child support payments. Gimme a break. After a long wait, when it rains, it pours - I get to see Darrell Scott & Tim O'Brien two nights in a row! I am a huge fan of Darrell Scott, and I know this will be a tremendous show. So I'll add 'are you producing SW's next CD?' to my list of questions for after the performance. And if you've never seen/heard Darrell, by all means check him out.
