On Saturday I went to the Flyers game, and we came back to I-95 via Delaware Avenue. While stopped at a light, I noticed we were at the intersection of Delaware Ave. & Shackamaxon St. This of course got me thinking about the obvious song. I looked around and didn't see anything that looked like it could have been an old sugar refinery, though. I figured the refinery, if it exists, had to be in Philadelphia, since at the time Susan lived in Philadelphia, and "Shackamaxon Street" is not a common name (the only other one I can find reference to is in Westfield, NJ). Anyway, I did a Google search, and found out that there was indeed a Jack Frost Sugar Refinery at Delaware and Shackamaxon, but that the building was demolished in two phases, with implosions on June 29 and November 2, 1997. If anyone is interested, there are some implosion photos (plus pre-implosion photos) at http://www.phillyblast.com/benthere.htm. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page -- the last two entried on the page are the entries for Jack Frost Sugar Refinery. - -Terry HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2001 06:00:22 -0700 From: "Ron Rosen" Subject: Re: That old Shackamaxon Street sugar refinery Thanks. I was recently in Philly, but the AAA map I was using didn't have a listing for Shackamaxon Street, but I was pretty sure it was somewhere in Philly... just a place by the river. I also figured that "City Line" is the same as City Avenue which is a major North/South artery at the west side of the city proper, but I'm not 100% sure of that. > > Just wanted to post a quick note to the list -- sorry if this had been > discussed before, I wasn't aware of it until now. > > On Saturday I went to the Flyers game, and we came back to I-95 via Delaware > Avenue. In fact, this street actually was called City Line Avenue in recent history. I don't know when the change was made. The song Shackamaxon Street was written by a local Philly songwriter named Tom Gala. Tom appears frequently at a venue called the Mermaid Inn, where Susn's career got a kick start when she was approached after a show by a philanthropist, a woman who donated heavily to the arts. She wrote a 4 figure check on the spot which funded Midwestern Saturday Night. Tom is a terrific and under-recognized writer. His webpage is located at http://www.navpoint.com/~gala/ And if you want to check out the demise of the Jack Frost refinery on Shackamaxon Street go to http://www.phillyblast.com/benthere.htm And you'll find the story and pictures at the bottom of the page. So I am particularly glad to have it on my freshly pressed (? digitized?) copy of the Bull Run concert. Thanks to all you tree members! Bummer!!! One of the big selling points of moving to Murfreesboro was being 30 minutes away from the Bluebird Cafe (where Susan has been known to play)! Oh well....Jane, Charlie, or anyone else chatting with Susan....tell her we'll be happy to provide her with a home-cooked meal in exchange for a private concert (or, let's face it, even without the concert) while she's in middle Tennessee....;) Visit My Home Page!
