I think she was right on him her assessment of what grabs the listener at a Susan Werner gig. However, didn't the next-to-last paragraph ring just a little too familiar to Susan Werner fans? If so, that's because it's lifted, almost word-for-word and without credit, from Susan's website (specifically, http://susanwerner.com/html/bio1.html ). They're actually copyrighted by The Bottom Line Record Company. I see they're also at http://javajoes.org/jj-133.html (where credit is explicitly given). >heavy sigh< Earl in St. Louis HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Apr 2001 10:19:11 -0700 From: "Ron Rosen" Subject: Re: Friday, April 13 in The Rockland Review I don't believe that's a copyright violation. It would seem that a one paragraph bio would be a fair use of the copyrighted material. It doesn't even appear that she lifted the entire paragraph. There seem to be several at least a couple versions of this paragraph floating around. The one Earl cited mention guitar at age 5, but nothing about piano at age 11. Could she have given credit? Yes, but I don't think it's a big deal. It may even have been edited out by the newspaper. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Earl T. Artist bio information included in a press kit is intended for the use of reviewers and reporters in writing about the artist. I've seen press kit bios printed in their entirety in newspaper articles, and as far as I know nobody cries foul about it. That's what it's there for. I would imagine that when presented with the choice of accurate information lifted from a press kit or inaccurate information at the hands of a confused reporter, an artist will opt for the former. I've written several artist bios for various events, and while I usually try to incorporate the information from the press kit while writing my own material, sometimes you just can't say it better than the person who wrote the bio in the kit. Maybe people aren't paying attention, but nobody's said anything to me about it. (If I'm completely wrong in my assessment of this, I'd appreciate it if someone in the know would set me straight. I don't want to inadvertently piss anyone off the next time I put some bios together!) ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Apr 2001 16:56:53 -0500 From: "Earl T. Higgins" Subject: Review of last week's St. Louis show Paul (Kim) wrote and asked me to do a review of the St. Louis show last week. In lieu of a genuine review (I don't take notes during the show), this will have to do. Susan arrived "about 10 minutes before stage time", arriving late due to visiting her godchild in Iowa City that afternoon. Also, as she explains, "St. Louis seems to have moved further South". Despite listed as being either at The Gargoyle or Ike's Place on the campus of Washington University (depending on which website you trusted), it was at actually neither. It was in Freeman (sp?) Lounge, immediately down the hall from Ike's Place. This offered a little more space and much cozier accommodations (couches mostly). By the time she got there, there were maybe 80 in attendance, perhaps evenly divided between students and non-students. This is her third time at Washington University in a little over a year, and quite a few repeat faces were seen. She was wearing a black high-neck top and the gray checkered, very flared pants previously mentioned on this list (for those of you keeping track). After the (very public) sound check and introduction (by Jill Stratton, who's in charge of this "acoustic city concert series"), She opened with TBT and Petaluma Afternoons. Then she went into the "color" cycle of new songs (Blue Guitar/Shade of Gray/Too Many Rooms) and apologized for playing so many unfamiliar songs (unfamiliar to whom? ;-) ) before singing Sorry About Jesus, Barbed Wire Boys and Karla Faye. She explained she'll be in Nashville most of next month recording (yeay!) and that Karla Faye will be on the album (double yeay!). There were a couple of other songs (Perigee?) in there before the short break, but notably absent was Dow Re Me :-( . Except for two encores, the rest of the show was on keyboard (a Kurzweil). Unfortunately the grand piano in the corner of the lounge sat covered up the whole evening. We got the "relationship" cycle including Tall Drink of Water, and possibly a few other new ones which escape me. Ain't I Lonely Tonight and Dana Cooper's Standing In My Own Way were the encores. All in all, another fine performance. What really struck me was how much her songwriting has improved, beyond its already high level. I absolutely can't wait to hear songs like Barbed Wire Boys on CD (over and over and over)! Susan (and Tracey) stayed around a little while afterwards to sign CD's and grab a bite to eat. She told us a little about the show the night before in Des Moines with Cheryl Wheeler (be still my beating heart), which was also her birthday. There were so many things I wanted to ask her, but naturally forgot, like, will Darrell Scott be producing the next album, will Dow Re Me be on it, and is she still considering naming it "5"? Any other list members in attendance care to add anything? I'm sure I missed a lot. I think it's a good song for her to do live, but I wouldn't want it taking up space on a new CD.
