I was Nerissa Nields and Pam Houston. I was expecting two folk singers, but Pam Houston is a writer!! She is a kick-ass writer and I really enjoyed her readings. She is a very close friend of Nerissa and they've been touring together. Because of Pam's readings Nerissa only did about 7 or 8 songs, many from the latest album. It was a really nice show in the home of a young actress/songwriter named Barbara Williams who did three of her own songs as an opener accompanied by keyboard and cello. The keyboard/bass player happened to be someone I know from the local rock club scene, so we had a nice reunion. The highlight was 100 Names and Pam's intro to it. Pam has had a lot of, shall we say "negative", experiences with men which she expresses so well and humorously in her writing. She finally met the right one and they're getting married on June 23. She wanted to ask Nerissa to sing 100 Names at the wedding but she was worried that Nerissa would say something like, "That's the date of the Ottowa Folk Festival" or "That's the date of our gig in ..." So Pam tells her the date and Nerissa makes her heart sink by saying that "That's....." but what followed was "That's the date of our anniversary!" It was a fun show. I plan to check out Pam Houston's works. I bought the Nields "If You Lived Here You'd Be Home Now." That's Susan playing piano on 100 Names. One Hundred Names I have known you all my life; In fact, I knew you long before A hundred years or so of you And all I want from you is more Sometimes I don't know who you are Sometimes I don't know why you stay All I know is when I called, you came I have known you by one hundred names. You're the sunshine on my floor You're the book I've halfway read You're the smile a stranger gave You're the blessing someone said You're my favorite cowboy song Echoed aching at sunset Sung together round a fire on the Plains I have known you by one hundred names They say I lean on you too much They say I'll never stand alone But how can they know what it's like To live with you inside our home You make me grateful for the gray You make me grateful for the blue Every morning you love me just the same I have known you by one hundred names I have known you by one hundred names Nerissa Nields c 1999 Peter Quince Productions (ASCAP) HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Apr 2001 11:00:18 -0500 From: Kellie Lin Knott Subject: Re: Nields/Houston House Concert Great review, Ron! I so enjoy when people on the list post concert reviews, for both Susan, and others writers as well that might pique the interest of those of us concerned with good songwriting. Thanks for the post! Hey, while we're talking good writing, does anyone have any suggestions for some great non-fiction, (or fiction)? I'm interested in thick imagery and strong storytelling sensibilities. Currently re-reading "Mrs. Dalloway" by V. Woolf and finishing up "Longitude" (non-fiction - detailing the history of longitude and the marine time keepers designed to tackle this problem).... I'd be interested to hear what ya'll are reading. If this discussion is not really relevant to the list, or if you'd rather share privately, so be it. I'll look forward to getting some ideas. Thanks! Susan made the comment that half the people she saw in the lobby she was related to, and the other half she went to high school with. There were well over 500 people there, in the Hotel Ft. Des Moines ballroom. Unfortunately, the ticket office had told me it was reserved seating but it WASN'T, so we got there after the house had been open for 30 minutes and had to sit halfway back. It seemed like miles away, and as everyone knows, it's much better to see her close up, but still, a distant Susan is much better than none at all! The concert was a double bill with Cheryl Wheeler, of course wonderful to see Cheryl again but would've loved a full night of each one too! Susan played first, then after Cheryl's set she invited Susan on the stage for two rousing encores. The first song I don't even remember, but the second was their own version of "Kansas City." To my surprise, Cheryl announced that it was Susan's birthday, and led the audience in a rendition of "happy birthday." My guess is that she's 35, as I remember a concert about 5 years ago at the Tin Angel when she was discussing turning 30 (she mentioned all the "adult" things that turning 30 makes you want to do - like become a member of public television, and bird watching). And of course there's the "four years old in 1969" reference as well. To answer the request of a wardrobe update, she was wearing a high neck black tank top and black & white checkered pants (men's style). Her set was as follows: TBT Petaluma Aft. Another Shade of Gray Too Many Rooms Mercy in the Sky Big Big Car Happiness Maybe...Cole Porter Much at All I Can't Be New (?) Standing in my own Way May I suggest (? - ballad on piano) Entirely way too short of a performance, but Cheryl was able to dazzle us as well, just in a different way. Speaking of Petaluma Afternoons, I was reading some earlier comments from people traveling or living there who like this song - it makes me think of my brother who lived in Petaluma for many years. He lived outside of town in a hillside valley, and was always complaining about ants, so he loves the Buddah-ants reference. Also, I believe that the significance of "afternoons" is relevant to where he lived, because he always talked about how his valley was completely fogged in until at least 10am every day, then the sun would break through and it would indeed feel "like butter." My guess is that wherever Susan was, it was outside of the downtown area and in this countryside of Petaluma, where the afternoons are truly cherished. Just a thought.
