It occurs to me that she is limited, not totally but to some extent, to performing her more folk oriented songs and her "chanteusey" piano standards in concert as some of her more jazzy pieces possibly wouldn't come across well if interpreted with guitar or piano alone. (Like BRING 'ROUND THE BOAT sans the bass or MONTGOMERY STREET without the trumpet). Then it occurred to me that maybe there's this mass volume of jazz work she's got sitting on the back burner begging for accompaniment. Don't get me wrong, I adore Susan's work. I see her anytime she's anywhere in my approximate vicinity and just the fact that she's so brilliantly self maintained on stage is the very essence of her appeal, but wouldn't it be fun to see her perform with a band? Just once? Just wondering out loud. :) Pattye Harrisonburg, VA HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2001 09:11:49 EST From: PBCoustic@aol.com Subject: Re: The SW Band Very true... pieces like "Montgomery Street" and other like it are very nice, and it's a shame to not be able to hear them live since it's "just Susan" (!!!)... hmmm.. maybe a shared bill with Patricia Barber, using her trio-mates.... Very jazzy. She's gone back to band support from time to time, with mixed results. I'm pretty sure the show she did on Penn's Landing as part of the WXPN Singer-Songwriter weekend in '95 or '96 (after LOTGSG's release) featured a full-fledged band (that's the show where Marshall Crenshaw flew in to back her up, but his flight got in late). She did have guitarist Jay Scott accompany her for a time in '97 and '98, and they were a nice team. In the summer of '97 or '98 she did a few shows at the Tin Angel with a band (bass, drum and lead guitar-- possibly Jay Scott again), and the arrangements were often nice; I remember one show where she tried singing "LOTGSG" with just a drumbeat accompanying the first verse, and a terrific version of Burt Bacharach's "This Girl's In Love With You." Alas, the band seemed to put too much of a distance between her and the audience; she seemed insecure, and she didn't do much of the improvisational comedy or conversations with the audience that I've come to treasure at her shows. Probably because it would give the guys standing behind her nothing to do but, well, stand behind her. Yes, there are limitations to being a solo performer, and Susan has tried to break them from time to time. But there are constraints in a band, too, and Susan hasn't found a happy medium point yet. - -Tim - ----- Original Message ----- From: > I was wondering if anyone had ever seen Susan perform accompanied by a > band. Yep. Smokin'...would love to hear that. Though I have heard, on various occasions, the two songs you mention below, in solo acoustic format. Susan's musicality is such that i never missed the band from the album tracks. Her percussive guitar and steady groove imply the parts that aren't there live, so I end up hearing an orchestra no matter what she's playin'. =) -- Kell > I was wondering if anyone had ever seen Susan perform accompanied by a > band.
