From: Carolyn Andre > when I heard it (the one time I've heard it ... for moving to Chicago, she > plays out here less than when she lived in Philly!), I had a sense it was > *intended* to be a play on or blatant derivation from traditional. What makes the song work for me is that its simple old-fashioned melody contrasts so sharply with the modern angst of the lyrics. When people from the hills were writing country blues in the twenties and thirties, they weren't worried about things like "This little yellow house has too many rooms." So Susan created an existential blues by placing an overly-self-centered lyric in a traditional-style song. The song wouldn't work with a more complex melody or guitar style. - -Tim HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Mar 2001 05:08:24 -0800 (PST) From: Laura Burgess Subject: Access to Archives? <> Thanks for the link to the original post; I hadn't remembered that it asked us to give our state (I'm in Tennessee if you still need that info). The archives for *all* the lists on the smoe.org server can be accessed at: http://www.smoe.org/lists In my copious free time (yeah, right) I'll browse recent archives from other lists to see what's happening out there. Also, you may find a list for another artist that you may want to join. I don't have an exact count right now, but I think there are over 100 lists running from the server. I'll amend the message footer sometime over the next few days to add the archive addy. This weekend I'll be a little busy, 'cause I'm doing stage manager duties for a benefit concert in Philly featuring Kevin So and...some obscure folky named Dar something-or-other. As I started to type this, what comes on WXPN but the lovely voice of Susan Werner singing "Something So Right" :-) Charlie (=}===# Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! It's a good tune in concert, though.... Susan has written several songs from what she calls a "Great Plains" perspective, and that is certainly one of them. The old-time, bluegrass-y feel of it definitely puts a Great Plains sort of imagery in my mind. So I'd have to say I don't think it's too simplistic or traditional at all. As othes have noted, there is much more going on in the song than just the melody. > * Perhaps Susan's next release should be a DOUBLE CD -- one of guitar, >one of piano????? Now THAT would be cool..... The next album, which she will be recording in May will be a "guitar" album if you will. Susan has said she would like the next album after that to be nothing but her piano stuff, which she'd love to accompany with a piano-only tour where she'd be wearing a gown and heels and maybe have a trio behind her or something. (She briefly alluded to this in Mt. Kisco last weekend.) That would be amazing. ======================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= ***!!!GO UCONN!!!*** ======================================= http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Mar 2001 20:08:20 -0800 (PST) From: Laura Burgess Subject: Double CD? <> Ohhh....heaven!
