Excellent show. Susan looked great. In the past year or so she's doing less "back and forth" banter with the audience than in the past. She said the show went by "so fast." Of course the audience reaction was, "It ALWAYS does!" She said she used to be afraid of LA but isn't anymore. A couple highlights: Petaluma Afternoons: "Portland's just a downspout, Seatle's only EARTHQUAKES in the rain (preceded by a great facial expression that said, "I'm about to drop one on you!"). ("Carlos Santana on the radio.") A few songs after she did Cole Porter, she did Much At All, and the piano solo in Much was the melody from Cole Porter!! Susan said when she does her all piano "standards" album she will wear a dress for that. She did Shot Tower and it had more impact because of the San Diego shootings the other day. She had performed in San Diego the night before. She did a few guitar things at the end of some songs that were amazing and would have been part of show stopping jams if she was part of a band and did them in the middle of a song! In addition to the Martin, Susan played a guitar that was new to me - the body is not symetrically shaped. Forgot to find out what it was. Forgot a lot of things. Jane was there but did not re-tune the guitars and hand them back to Susan as in the past, so did not appear on stage during the show. What I remember of the set -- (sounded much better in person than on cell phone) Time Between Trains - jazzed up Petaluma Afternoons Shade of Gray Too Many Rooms Mercy in the Sky (Mary Gauthier) Big Car Shot Tower Nephretities' Dream (?) J.C., Ain't I Lonely Tonight Tall Drink of Water Maybe If I Sang Cole Porter No One Needs To Know Much At All Light Sleeper Much At All I Can't Be New ("after this I'll do one more song and that will be the end of the show, but who am I kidding? We all know how it works.") Standing In My Own Way 1st encore: Don't Dream it's Over by Crowded House (Susan acted surprised when I asked her after the show what this song was. I told her I don't know anything after 1969. ;-) I said I liked the fact that she always threw in some "older stuff" like Fred Neil, Dylan, Beatles, and she said "That's not old stuff, that's been around all the time." 2nd encore: Everybody's Talkin' by Fred Neil (great version) HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Mar 2001 09:45:06 EST From: PBCoustic@aol.com Subject: Re: Susan at McCabe's The mystery guitar was probably the latest one that was given to her by Chris Jenkins at the Dallas show -- he's made two or three for her the last two times through... Nice work... That reminds me. Susan sang a bunch of thank yous to various people as part of the intro to her "last" song, and among the thank yous was one to the tech guy at McCabes for intalling a new pick-up in her Martin. She even sang the exact make and model number of the new pick-up. Funny! (I was reminded by my the framed, hand-written by Susan, set list from last February's Pasadena show that hangs on my wall of fame).
